Why Korea Has No SPF 100 (and Is It Actually Better?)
SPF 100 looks like it should be twice as strong as SPF 50. The number is double, so surely the protection is too. Then you walk into a Korean drugstore, scan the sunscreen shelf, and the biggest number you can find is SPF50+. Not 70, not 90, definitely not 100. So what’s going on? Is Korea quietly under-protecting everyone, or is the number on that American bottle doing more marketing than blocking? Here’s the full story, with the real percentages, why Korea stops at 50+, and whether the big number is actually better in real life.
TL;DR: On paper the gap is tiny. SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB and SPF 100 blocks about 99%, so it’s a one-point difference, not double. What SPF 100 actually blocks (compared to SPF 50)
Answer first: almost the same amount. Sunscreen filtering does not scale in a straight line, so a much bigger SPF number buys a much smaller gain. The University of Texas at Austin lays out the full ladder: “the amount of UVB radiation blocked by SPF 15, 30, 50, 100 sunscreen is 93 percent, 97 percent, 98 percent and 99 percent, respectively” [1]. Read that again. Going from SPF 50 to 100 moves you from 98% to 99%, a single percentage point.
Where does the shape of that curve come from? SPF roughly tells you the fraction of UVB that still gets through, as one divided by the number. One over 50 is about 2%, so about 98% is blocked. One over 100 is about 1%, so about 99% is blocked. The same source puts it plainly: “doubling the SPF does not double the amount of protection one gets from sunscreen” [1]. The American Academy of Dermatology agrees, noting that “higher-number SPFs block slightly more of the sun’s UVB rays, but no sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s UVB rays” [2]. So the real headline number at 100 is 99%, and its neighbor SPF 50 is already at 98%.
Why Korea’s shelf stops at SPF50+
Here’s the reason the shelf stops where it does. Korea caps what the label is allowed to say. The Korea Cosmetic Industry Association spells it out: in Korea, the SPF figure can be shown up to 50, and any product testing above that is labeled 50+ [3]. Sunscreens in Korea are regulated as functional cosmetics, which means the SPF and PA claims are tested and reviewed before the product ships, and the printed ceiling is SPF50+. A Korean formula could test higher than 50 in the lab, but it will still say 50+ on the tube. The EU similarly caps its sunscreen labeling at 50+.
The US went a different way, and that’s why SPF 100 exists on American shelves at all. In its 2019 proposed rule, the FDA walked through the history: the FDA’s old 1999 sunscreen rulebook set “SPF 30+ as the maximum labeled SPF value,” then FDA “subsequently proposed (in 2011) to raise this value to SPF 50+,” and in 2019 proposed to “raise the maximum labeled SPF value to SPF 60+,” while permitting “the marketing of sunscreen products formulated with SPF values up to 80” [4]. Notice the direction: even the FDA’s proposed cap climbed from 30+ to 50+ to 60+, because studies kept showing real benefit up to SPF 60. But that rule was never finalized, so nothing forces US brands down to a cap. That’s why you can still buy SPF 100 in the US from brands like Banana Boat, which advertises protection against 99% of burning rays [5]. So the difference between a Korean shelf and an American one is a labeling rule, not a protection gap.
So is SPF 100 actually better?
This is where the honest answer gets interesting, because it isn’t a flat “no.” On paper the difference is one point. In real life, though, the number on the bottle is measured with a thick lab layer that almost nobody recreates. The AAD notes that “as many individuals only apply about 20-50% of the amount of sunscreen needed to achieve the amount of SPF on the label,” and that “application of high-SPF sunscreens helps to compensate for this under-application” [2]. In other words, a higher starting number gives you more to lose before your real protection drops too low.
That’s not just theory. A 2018 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology tested it directly: 199 people wore two sunscreens at once, SPF 50 on one side of the face and a bottle labeled 100 on the other, during a full day of natural sunlight in Vail, Colorado, not knowing which was which. After about six hours outside, 110 of the 199 were more sunburned on the SPF 50 side, and only 10 were more sunburned on the other. The authors concluded that “SPF 100+ sunscreen was significantly more effective in protecting against sunburn than SPF 50+ sunscreen in actual use conditions” [6]. So in the messy real world, where people rub, sweat, and under-apply, that one-point cushion did make a measurable difference.
Why chasing the number is still the wrong move
Read the last section and it’s tempting to go hunt for the biggest number you can find. Don’t. The reason it helped in that study is that people applied too little, and the fix for applying too little is to apply enough, not to buy a bigger label to paper over the habit. The very same lab result that a higher SPF is a buffer is also its trap: a big number talks people into staying out longer and reapplying less. The FDA flagged exactly this, warning that high numbers “may inadvertently promote extended solar exposures because consumers feel protected and assume that the higher SPF value implies that greater UV exposure is safe” [4]. That false sense of security can erase the 1% you paid for.
There’s also what SPF does not measure at all. The number only describes UVB, the rays that burn. It says nothing about UVA, the rays tied to aging and long-term damage, which is why you want a broad-spectrum formula no matter the SPF. And a well-applied SPF50+ already sits at 98%. So here is the order that actually matters:
