UPF Clothing vs Sunscreen: What the Fabric Rating Actually Covers
“Just wear a shirt instead” is good advice attached to the wrong shirt. The plain white tee most people picture has been measured, and it isn’t the one doing the work.
The short version: UPF clothing vs sunscreen isn’t really a contest, because they cover different parts of you. UPF is a rating for fabric, and a UPF 50 garment lets about one fiftieth of UV through, which is 98% blocked.[2] An ordinary white cotton T-shirt is nowhere near that: one study measured a mean UPF of 4.94 for T-shirt fabric,[1] and the Skin Cancer Foundation puts a standard white tee at about 7, falling to about 3 once it’s wet.[2] Your face, ears, neck and hands are still bare either way.
What is UPF actually measuring, and how is it different from SPF?
Different thing, different lab.
SPF is measured on skin. UPF is measured on cloth. In the American test method, a piece of fabric goes into a spectrophotometer, the machine measures how much UV gets through it at each wavelength, and UPF comes out as the ratio between the UV hitting the detector with no fabric in the way and the UV that makes it through the fabric.[3] Nothing about that number involves a person, a dose or a two-hour window.
The label side has its own document. ASTM D6603 is the specification for labeling textiles meant to protect people from UVA and UVB.[3] So a garment tagged UPF 50+ is making a claim with a test method behind it, in a way that “protective fabric” on a hang tag is not.
The practical translation is the one worth keeping: UPF 50 means about 98% of UV blocked and roughly one fiftieth getting through.[2]
Is the T-shirt already in my drawer enough?
Usually not, and the gap is bigger than people expect.
A 2001 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology measured UV transmission through cotton T-shirt fabric and reported a mean UPF of 4.94.[1] The same researchers found the number moves a lot depending on what you do to the fabric: washing with water alone raised it 51%, washing with detergent 17%, dyeing it blue 544% and yellow 212%.[1] They also noted more UVA gets through these fabrics than UVB.[1] Their own conclusion was that “the two cotton fabrics used in this study offered limited protection against UV radiation as determined by spectrophotometric analysis”.[1]
Then there’s water. The Skin Cancer Foundation puts a standard white T-shirt around UPF 7, dropping to about UPF 3 when it’s wet, and says clothing that’s wet or stretched loses some of its protective ability and becomes more transparent.[2] If you’ve ever swum in a shirt to avoid reapplying, that line is the one that matters, and our water-resistant piece covers the sunscreen half of the same problem.

Read down that table and the answer stops looking like a choice. Fabric is the better tool for the parts it covers, because it doesn’t wear off over the afternoon. Sunscreen is the only tool for the parts no shirt reaches, which happen to be the parts of you that get the most sun.
So what do I actually do on a normal day?
Cover what you can with cloth, then use sunscreen on what’s left, and stop treating the two as rivals.
For most people that means the shirt handles the torso and arms, and the sunscreen handles the face, the ears, the back of the neck and the backs of the hands. Those last two are the ones people forget, and we have a whole piece on them. What a UPF label doesn’t tell me
Three things, and none of them are printed on the tag.
- How it behaves on you. The test measures a piece of fabric in a machine.[3] Stretching it over a shoulder is not that test, and stretched fabric transmits more.[2]
- How wet it gets. A rating is not a promise about the same garment soaked through.[2]
- What it covers. A UPF 50+ rash guard does nothing at all for your face, and no fabric number changes that.
None of this makes UPF clothing a gimmick. It makes it a tool with a shape, and the shape is the part of your body it’s actually touching.
FAQ
Can I skip sunscreen if I’m wearing a UPF 50 shirt?
On the skin under the shirt, that’s what the rating is for. On your face, ears, neck and hands the shirt does nothing, so those still need sunscreen.
Is my normal white T-shirt basically the same thing?
No. One study measured a mean UPF of 4.94 for cotton T-shirt fabric, and the Skin Cancer Foundation puts a standard white tee around 7 against the 50 on a rated garment.
Does it matter if my shirt gets wet at the beach?
Yes. The Skin Cancer Foundation says a white tee falls to about UPF 3 when wet, and that wet or stretched clothing becomes more transparent.
Does a darker shirt protect me better?
In that 2001 study, dyeing the cotton fabric blue raised its UPF by 544% and yellow by 212%. That was dyeing in a lab rather than a color rule for your wardrobe, so treat it as a direction, not a number for your own shirt.
Which should I spend money on first?
Sunscreen, because it’s the only one of the two that reaches your face. Clothing is the cheaper way to solve the parts you can simply cover.
