Korean Sun Stick vs Sun Cushion: Only One Was Measured
Both formats exist for the same reason: you can’t rub a cream into a finished face at 2pm without wrecking it. So the sun stick vs sun cushion question gets asked as a shopping question, and every page answering it tells you the stick is faster and the cushion is more even. We went looking for a measurement instead, and found something odd. One of these two has a number in the published literature. The other one, in every search we ran, has nothing at all.
The short version: These two are not evenly evidenced. A study of 52 people measured stick sunscreen going onto skin at a geometric mean of 0.35 mg per square centimeter, against 1.1 for lotion and 1.6 for spray, while a lab measures the SPF on a label at 2 mg per square centimeter.[1] For a cushion we found no measured figure: the PubMed searches we ran returned zero papers pairing the word cushion with sunscreen in a title or abstract.[2] That zero is a gap in the literature rather than a finding about the product. What we can stand behind is narrower than a verdict: the dose, the puff you keep reusing, the direction your hand moves, and the fact that US label rules name no format at all.[7]
Sun stick vs sun cushion: only one of them has a measured dose
There is one number, it belongs to the stick, and it is low.
Two clarifications before that number does any work. It comes from a single study of 52 people, and it is a geometric mean rather than a typical amount for you personally. And it says nothing about a cushion, because no cushion was in the study.

How much does a sun stick actually leave on my skin?
In that study, less than a third of what the same people got from a lotion. The paper’s own framing is that this was an open question: “However, there is little information regarding the application of spray and stick sunscreens.” Its method was plain enough to describe in one sentence: “Fifty-two participants applied lotion, spray, and stick sunscreen and answered a questionnaire.” The result reads “The geometric means for the application thickness of lotion, spray, and stick sunscreens were 1.1, 1.6, and 0.35 mg/cm(2), respectively.”[1]
Our arithmetic on those three figures, not the paper’s: 0.35 against the 2 mg/cm² reference is roughly a sixth, and 0.35 against 1.1 is under a third. The authors draw the conclusion in general terms rather than ranking formats, saying users “applied different amounts of sunscreen depending on the application method, affording different levels of sun protection.”[1]
Two limits on that, stated plainly because they cut both ways. It’s one study, and the authors are at a consulting firm, with preservative exposure as a joint objective of the work. We read the abstract in full and could not open the full paper, which sits behind a publisher paywall, so we don’t know how the stick was demonstrated to participants. Why can’t I find the same number for a cushion?
Because as far as we can tell nobody has published one. We went looking properly rather than guessing, and here is exactly what we ran, so you can repeat it.

The last two rows are the ones worth reading closely. Dropping the field limit does not find hidden cushion research, it finds a paper about zinc oxide foam in cardiac implants and a paper about zinc oxide nanostructures shaped like a pin cushion cactus.[2] And the quoted searches are worth distrusting on principle: "sunscreen sticks" with an s returns 40 results, because PubMed silently expands a phrase it can’t match into an OR of its words. We used title and abstract field limits to stop that happening.
So what does zero mean? Only that these searches found nothing. It does not mean a cushion deposits enough, and it does not mean a cushion deposits less than a stick. Nobody we read has weighed one. If you want the closest thing anyone has measured, it points the opposite way from the intuition: when ten people applied sunscreen to their own backs, a foam tip applicator got more product on than bare hands did, 7.58 g against 6.22 g, with back coverage of 84.8% against 71.5%.[3] A foam tip on a back is not a puff on a face, and we’re not going to invent a bridge between them. It is simply the only applicator measurement we found, and it says a tool between your hand and your skin doesn’t automatically mean less product.
The puff is the part you keep using
A stick has no separate applicator. A cushion has one, it’s soft and damp, it goes back into a closed compact after touching your face, and you own it for the life of the product. That difference has nothing to do with protection and everything to do with what you’re carrying around.
Nobody has published anything on sun cushion puffs specifically, in the searches we ran. What has been measured is the nearest relative. When researchers grew bacteria from donated used cosmetics, they reported that “About 79-90% of all used products were contaminated with bacteria, with bacterial loads ranging between 102 and 103 CFU per ml, beauty blenders contained an average load of >106 CFU per ml.” One warning about reading that: the abstract prints its exponents as flat text, so 102 and 103 there mean 10² and 10³, and >106 means more than a million per milliliter. The behavioral finding is the part that stuck with us: “Ninety-three per cent of beauty blenders had not been cleaned and 64% had been dropped on the floor and continued to be used.”[4]
A second study is more specific about why a damp applicator is the hard case. Testing reusable make-up applicators against three disinfectants, it found “Disinfection was more effective on applicators used for dry products (natural brush) than for wet products (sponge, synthetic brush).” Its sponge samples went from 617 colonies to three after bactericidal soap, and ethanol “eliminated 100% of bacterial growth.”[5]
What that does and doesn’t license. A beauty blender is not a sun cushion puff, the used products were donated with unknown histories, and the second study looked at salon applicators rather than the one in your bag. Neither paper says a cushion causes anything. What they do support is narrow and useful: a reusable applicator for a wet product is the category where cleaning matters most, and where measured cleaning habits were worst. The stick avoids that category by not having an applicator, and pays for it differently, because the product itself is the thing touching your face and then going back under a cap. No source we read has swabbed a sun stick either.
Am I moving my makeup or pressing on it?
The two formats ask your hand to do opposite things: you drag a stick across skin, and you press a puff into it. This is the difference people notice, and it has the least evidence behind it of anything on this page, so what follows is only the part you can check yourself on an ingredient list.
We opened every listing the database INCIDecoder returns for the three sticks and the two cushions our own guides already link to, ten pages for five products.[8] All three sticks list a wax or a solid gelling agent: Synthetic Wax and Ozokerite on one, Synthetic Wax and Microcrystalline Wax on another, and two dibutyl glutamides among the gelling agents on the third. Neither cushion lists a wax, and on both, Water is the first ingredient.
Which listings we counted. Counts are of unique /ingredients/ anchors on each product page rather than string matches, because string matching misses spelling variants. Splitting the printed list on commas instead inflates all ten pages, by two on one Round Lab page and by one on the other nine, because 1,2-Hexanediol and Adansonia Digitata Seed Extract (1,045Ppm) carry commas of their own. Every one of the ten also prints a zero width space inside at least one ingredient name, which breaks a string comparison and leaves an anchor count untouched. An anchor count fails the other way, by undercounting a page that prints a name the database does not recognize, because an unrecognized name is not a link. On these ten pages that did not happen: every printed name is linked. I excluded Stearic Acid, which appears on both cushions, from the wax and gelling agent column, because a fatty acid at a low position can be doing emulsifier work instead. Anchor counts: 51, 46 and 43 for the sticks, 42 and 68 for the cushions.[8]
Where that method fails, since it does. Three of the five products have more than one page in the database, and the pages disagree on the count. The Round Lab stick has two, named identically apart from a space inside SPF 50+, at 51 anchors and 49. A search for the Beauty of Joseon stick returns three, named Matte Sun Stick, then Matte Sun Stick : Mugwort+Camelia, then Matte Sun Stick: Mugwort + Camelia SPF50 PA++++, at 48, 47 and 46, and nothing on those pages tells me whether the first is the same product without its subtitle or a different one. The D’Alba cushion has two whose names match character for character, at 68 anchors and 71. None of these pages carries a date or a label saying which matches a tube on sale now, so each figure above is the page we read and not the product’s ingredient count. The two Dr. G pages both come to 43, and the Missha cushion has one page. Every address is in the note.[8]
And the honest wrinkle, since it breaks the neat version: one of the three sticks lists Water as its first ingredient too. So “the stick is the waterless one” is not a rule you can carry to a shelf.
What no source we read has measured is how much makeup either format moves. We found no study on that for a stick or for a cushion, so the mechanical description above is where we stop. The label rules do not know which one you are holding
Answer first: in the US, the regulation that produces the SPF number and the reapply instruction is format blind. We read 21 CFR 201.327 in the original and searched it. The words stick, cushion, powder, spray, lotion and cream appear zero times each, and so does the phrase dosage form.[7]
What the section does say applies identically to both. The labeling states “reapply at least every 2 hours” and “use a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating”, and under Other information every container carries “protect the product in this container from excessive heat and direct sun”.[7] That last line is where a wax based solid and a water based liquid part company in practice, and we’ve already written that piece rather than repeating it: what heat does to a sunscreen.
Dermatologists add one condition that neither format is built to satisfy. The American Academy of Dermatology’s instruction is “When applying sunscreen to your face, use at least 1 teaspoon (about the amount needed to cover the length of your index and middle fingers). Rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin.” and “To remain protected when outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours, and immediately after swimming or sweating.”[6] Rubbing thoroughly is the step both of these formats are bought to avoid. We made that same argument about mists in our piece on SPF setting sprays, so treat this as the second time you’ve seen it from us rather than new evidence.
Where each one earns its place in a day
Neither of these is the better product. They’re answers to different moments, and the evidence supports splitting them by moment rather than ranking them.
- A day with no mirror in it. Commutes, walks, a hand out a car window. A stick works without a reflective surface or a free second hand, and that convenience is the only reason a reapply happens at all. Accept that the measured figure for a stick was the lowest of the three formats tested, and go over each area more than once.[1]
- A desk, a bathroom, a made-up face. A cushion is the format built for pressing rather than dragging, and it has a mirror in the lid. It also has the applicator you have to look after, so pick this one knowing the puff is now your job.[4][5]
- Either way, the morning layer is separate. Both of our format guides say the same thing and so does the amount guide: reapplying is a top-up on a full base, not a substitute for one. That part is settled and it isn’t what this comparison is about.

Four things you should know before this comparison travels
First, the asymmetry in this piece is an asymmetry of evidence, not of quality. If someone measures a cushion tomorrow and the figure comes in above the stick’s, nothing above was wrong and the ranking would still not be ours to hand out.
Second, we did not find a single study that put a stick and a cushion in the same room. Every comparison here is two documents about two objects, which is weaker than a head to head test, and we’d rather say so than dress it up.
Third, the two hygiene papers are about beauty blenders and salon applicators. Reading them as findings about sun cushions is our reader’s most likely mistake and we’d be making it too if we wrote a sentence like “cushion puffs carry a million CFU.” They don’t say that.
Fourth, the ingredient work is ten pages for five products, read on one day, 2026-07-30. Korean sunscreens get reformulated, listings go stale, and there are dozens of sticks and cushions we didn’t open. Treat the wax finding as a pattern in five products, not a law about two categories.
FAQ
Which korean sunscreen format should I get for reapplying over BB cream, a cushion or a stick?
Pick by whether you’ll have a mirror and a free hand. A stick needs neither, which is why it survives in a bag and gets used. A cushion is built for pressing product onto a finished face and comes with a mirror in the lid, but the puff is a reusable damp applicator you now have to keep clean. On protection there’s no honest tiebreaker: the only measured application figure belongs to the stick, at 0.35 mg per square centimeter in one study of 52 people, and no study we found has measured a cushion at all.
Is a sun stick really only a sixth of a proper dose?
That’s our arithmetic on one study’s figure, so hold it loosely. The study reported a geometric mean of 0.35 mg per square centimeter for stick sunscreen, and labs test an SPF at 2 mg per square centimeter, which works out at about a sixth. It was 52 people, one study, and a geometric mean rather than what you personally lay down. The practical response isn’t to drop the stick, it’s to go over each area several times instead of once.
Do I have to clean the puff in my sun cushion?
No source we read tells you how often, and we won’t invent a number for you. Take the boundary first, because neither study below tested a sun cushion or the puff inside one, which makes both of them evidence about other objects. In a study of donated used cosmetics, beauty blenders averaged more than a million colony forming units per milliliter, 93% had never been cleaned, and 64% had been dropped on the floor and used anyway. A separate study of salon applicators found disinfection worked less well on the ones used for wet products than on the ones used for dry products, though ethanol eliminated all bacterial growth in its test. Those two objects are as close as the research we read gets, and the figures do not transfer to a cushion. What transfers is the category: an applicator that stays damp and gets reused is the kind worth cleaning, and a cushion puff is one of those.
Can I use either of these as my only sunscreen?
Treat both as top-ups over a full morning layer. The AAD’s instruction for a face is at least one teaspoon, rubbed in thoroughly, and neither a stick nor a cushion is designed to deliver a teaspoon or to be rubbed in. Do the rules treat a stick and a cushion differently?
Not in the US labeling regulation we read. 21 CFR 201.327 names no dosage form at all: stick, cushion, powder, spray, lotion and cream each appear zero times in the section. Both get the same instruction to reapply at least every two hours, and both carry the same warning about excessive heat and direct sun.

One caution on that Missha address, because the page and its URL disagree. The page prints Rosy Tone Up and the address ends cover-tone-up-sun-cushion. A search on either wording returns that page, no second Safe Block RX cushion came back from any of the ten Missha queries, and the address that spells the printed name returns a 404. The name given above is the one printed on the page rather than the one in the address, which is also the name our own cushion guide uses.
