Best Korean Tinted Sunscreens: What the Shade Actually Buys You

A Korean tinted sunscreen promises two things at once: color correction and visible-light protection. The problem is that the label does not tell you which one you are actually getting. A product analysis of 37 tinted sunscreens found that 97.3% did not list iron oxide as an active ingredient, and only 9.6% of responding brands disclosed the iron oxide percentage when asked directly.[1] We checked the ingredient lists of six Korean tinted sunscreens ourselves. Here is what is actually in them.

The short version: “Tinted” and “tone-up” appear on different Korean sunscreens, but the labels don’t predict what’s inside. Some tone-up products contain iron oxides; others don’t. Out of the six picks below, only two contain iron oxides. The other four use ultramarines or chromium oxides for color, which correct your complexion but are not the pigments studied for visible-light protection. A clinical trial of tinted vs untinted sunscreen in melasma patients found no difference in severity scores; the tinted group only showed better color uniformity between affected and unaffected skin.[3] Buy these for the color. Treat the visible-light protection as a bonus, not a guarantee.

What “tinted” actually buys you

The word “tinted” on a sunscreen label means color has been added. It doesn’t mean visible-light protection has been tested or measured.

A 2026 product analysis in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology looked at 37 tinted sunscreens and found that 97.3% did not list iron oxide as an active ingredient.[1] When the researchers contacted brands directly, only 9.6% of responding brands disclosed the iron oxide percentage, with reported concentrations ranging from less than 1.4% to 10.4%.[1] And although six brands (19.3%) claimed their product protects against visible light, only one publicly detailed any specific testing performed.[1]

Iron oxides are the pigments that research has linked to visible-light (VL) protection, particularly for conditions like melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. UV filters block ultraviolet light. Iron oxides block visible light. These are different wavelength ranges, and one doesn’t do the other’s job. This doesn’t mean a tinted sunscreen without iron oxides is useless. It still has UV filters. But the “tinted” part is doing cosmetic work (color correction), not photoprotection work, unless the label specifically says otherwise and backs it up.

The melasma question

If you have melasma or hyperpigmentation, you may have heard that tinted sunscreen is better than untinted. Here is what the evidence actually shows.

A randomized clinical trial enrolled 42 women with melasma and assigned them to either a tinted sunscreen (with iron oxide and pigmentary titanium dioxide, visible-light protection factor of 66) or an untinted sunscreen with equivalent UV protection for five months during summer in Southern France.[3]

Both groups saw their melasma severity scores improve significantly. But the difference between the two groups on severity (mMASI) was not statistically significant.[3] Where the tinted group did better was color uniformity: the color difference between melasma-affected skin and unaffected skin decreased significantly in the tinted group but not in the untinted group.[3]

In plain terms: tinted sunscreen did not make the melasma itself better than untinted sunscreen did. It made the affected areas blend in more with the surrounding skin. That’s a cosmetic improvement, and for many people it matters a lot. But it’s not the same as the tinted sunscreen treating the melasma more effectively.

What “tone-up” doesn’t tell you

In Korean sunscreen, “tinted” and “tone-up” appear on different products, but the labels don’t sort neatly by ingredients. Some tone-up products contain iron oxides; others don’t. Most English-language reviews treat them as interchangeable.

Tone-up means a brightening, whitening, or lightening effect on the skin. The brightening can come from titanium dioxide (sometimes listed as CI 77891, a colorant code), but some tone-up products also contain iron oxides. Among our six picks, numbuzin and SKIN1004 are both marketed as tone-up and both contain iron oxides. Tinted or color-correcting means actual pigment-based coverage. Green corrects redness. Purple corrects sallowness. Beige provides skin-like coverage. The pigments doing this work are iron oxides (for skin-tone shades), chromium oxide greens (for green correction), and ultramarines (for purple correction).

Why does this matter? Because the front label doesn’t tell you whether iron oxides are inside. If you’re buying a tone-up sunscreen expecting visible-light protection from iron oxides, you can’t know from the name alone. The six picks below include both types. We checked the ingredient lists so you don’t have to guess.

Not one color fits all

A study tested seven “universal” tinted sunscreens on 30 participants across Fitzpatrick skin phototypes I through VI.[2] At the standard testing density of 2 mg/cm², two out of seven products matched SPT I-II (very fair), six out of seven matched SPT III-IV (medium), and only one out of seven matched SPT V-VI (dark).[2]

The takeaway: a single “universal” shade works for medium skin tones and almost nobody else. If you have very fair or very dark skin, a one-shade tinted sunscreen is likely to look off.

This is a limitation to keep in mind, not a disqualifier. The study tested products on arms, not faces, and the Korean picks below were not included.[2] But the underlying point holds: shade matching is personal, and “universal” is a marketing word, not a color science one. Two of the picks below (numbuzin with two shades, and Beauty of Joseon with green and purple variants) at least acknowledge that one color doesn’t fit everyone. Beauty of Joseon has since gone further with a mineral-only tinted release that runs to fifteen shades, under a name that changes with the retailer.

We checked every ingredient list on INCIDecoder (or, where unavailable, from verified retail INCI listings). Here is the breakdown across all six picks.

Two out of six contain iron oxides. The other four use color-correcting pigments (ultramarines, chromium oxides) that shift your complexion without the iron oxide content studied for visible-light blocking. This doesn’t make them bad sunscreens. Their UV filters still work. It means the “tinted” part is doing cosmetic color correction, not photoprotection.

numbuzin No.3 No Filter Tone-Up Sun Serum

SPF50+ PA++++. Two shades (01 Blur, 02 Glow). This is the only pick here that gives you a choice of shade, which matters if the “universal” color problem above concerns you.

The formula is a hybrid with six UV filters, including both mineral (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide) and organic filters. It contains all three iron oxides (CI 77491, 77492, 77499) plus mica, making it the closest thing to a “true tinted” sunscreen in this lineup. Centella asiatica leaf water is the first ingredient, with niacinamide, ceramide NP, and panthenol further down the list.[4]

One note: it does contain fragrance. If you’re sensitive to fragrance, this is worth knowing before you commit.

Beauty of Joseon Stay Fresh Tone-Up Sunscreen (Green)

SPF50+ PA++++. The green comes from chromium oxide greens (CI 77288) and ultramarines (CI 77007), not from iron oxides. This is a color-correcting sunscreen designed to neutralize redness.[5]

The UV filter stack is four organic filters: ethylhexyl triazone, drometrizole trisiloxane, DHHB (Uvinul A Plus), and terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid (Mexoryl SX). No mineral filters are listed as UV actives. The titanium dioxide present is tagged as CI 77891 (colorant code only).[5]

The formula includes centella asiatica extract and ceramide NP, with no fragrance or essential oils.[5]

Beauty of Joseon Stay Fresh Tone-Up Sunscreen (Purple)

SPF50+ PA++++. Same UV filter stack, same base formula, same centella and ceramide NP as the green version. The difference is one colorant: this version uses ultramarines (CI 77007) alone, without the chromium oxide greens.[6]

Purple corrects sallowness and yellow undertones. If you have warm undertones and want to brighten without adding more warmth, this is the version to try. If redness is your concern, the green version above is a better match. Fragrance-free.[6]

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Tone Brightening Tone Up

SPF50+ PA++++. This is one of the two picks with iron oxides, specifically CI 77492 (yellow) and CI 77491 (red).[7] The combination produces a warm peach tint rather than a beige or skin-tone match.

The UV filter stack is titanium dioxide (tagged as both sunscreen and colorant) plus three organic filters: DHHB, ethylhexyl triazone, and diethylhexyl butamido triazone (Uvasorb HEB).[7]

Centella asiatica extract is listed at 29,400 ppm, alongside niacinamide, tranexamic acid, and madecassoside. No fragrance, no essential oils.[7] If you have sensitive or irritation-prone skin and want a tinted option with actual iron oxides, this is the pick to start with.

d’Alba Waterfull Purple Correcting Tone-Up Sun Cream

SPF50+ PA++++. The purple comes from ultramarines (CI 77007), same as the BoJ purple version. No iron oxides. The UV filter stack includes titanium dioxide, DHHB, Polysilicone-15 (Parsol SLX), and ethylhexyl triazone.[8]

The formula includes niacinamide, glutathione, panthenol, allantoin, and squalane.[8]

Honest note on fragrance: d’Alba is the only pick here with essential oils. The ingredient list includes orange oil, mandarin peel oil, litsea cubeba oil, and lavender extract, plus the allergen markers limonene and citral.[8] If you’re fragrance-sensitive, this one isn’t for you.

At around $32, it’s also the most expensive pick on this list. The vegan label may matter to some buyers, but the fragrance load is something to weigh against the price.

JUMISO Niacinamide 3+ Tone-Up Sunscreen

SPF50+ PA++++. Five UV filters, the most of any pick here: ethylhexyl triazone, Tinosorb S (BEMT), Tinosorb M (MBBT), titanium dioxide, and DHHB.[9] If filter count and photostability are your priority, this is the most UV filters of any pick here. No iron oxides. The tint comes from ultramarines, which places this in the purple-correction family alongside the BoJ purple and d’Alba picks. The difference is what else is in the formula: niacinamide is placed fifth in the ingredient list (a high position), alongside tranexamic acid, hexylresorcinol, and glutathione.[9] This is the pick that doubles as an active-ingredient treatment step.

Why iron oxides matter if you care about pigmentation

UV filters protect against ultraviolet light, but visible light (the wavelengths you can actually see, roughly 400 to 700 nm) also reaches your skin, and a growing body of research links it to pigmentation in darker skin tones. Iron oxides absorb in that visible range in a way that UV filters alone do not. The catch, as the product analysis above shows, is that most tinted sunscreens do not disclose whether they contain iron oxides or how much. Of the picks on this list, numbuzin No.3 No Filter and SKIN1004 Tone Brightening are the two with confirmed iron oxides in the ingredient list. What is the difference between tone-up and tinted sunscreen?

Tone-up sunscreens brighten your skin, often using titanium dioxide. Some also contain iron oxides; others don’t. Tinted sunscreens use pigments like iron oxides, ultramarines, or chromium oxides to add color coverage. The label alone doesn’t tell you whether iron oxides are inside, so you have to check the ingredient list.

Do tinted sunscreens protect against visible light?

Not necessarily. Iron oxides are the pigments most studied for visible-light protection, but 97.3% of tinted sunscreen products did not list iron oxide as an active ingredient, and only 9.6% of responding brands disclosed the iron oxide percentage when asked. UV filters in any sunscreen protect against ultraviolet light. Whether a tinted sunscreen also blocks visible light depends on what pigments are present and in what concentration, which most labels don’t tell you.

Can tinted sunscreen replace foundation?

Some tinted sunscreens are marketed as foundation replacements. Whether one works for you depends on the coverage level, shade match, and finish. Color-correcting sunscreens (green for redness, purple for sallowness) are designed to shift undertone rather than match skin color, so shade matching is less of a concern with those.
