Do Korean Sunscreens Stain Clothes Less? The Avobenzone Answer
The collar looked clean going into the machine. It came out with a yellow band along the neckline, or worse, an orange one, and the first question is the right one: does sunscreen stain clothes, or was it something else? Usually it was the sunscreen, and more precisely one ingredient in it. This article is about which ingredient, what the one peer-reviewed fabric test we could find actually measured, and whether switching to a Korean sunscreen gets you out of the problem. The answer to that last part is “read the back of the tube,” because the country on the front tells you less than you’d expect.
The short version: The yellow-to-orange stain is usually avobenzone, the UVA filter found in many US chemical sunscreens. In the one peer-reviewed stain test we could find, avobenzone at 10% left a strong yellow mark on white cotton while homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene and octinoxate left none, and the products least likely to stain white fabric “contained ZnO and lacked avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octocrylene.”[1] The orange shade is blamed on iron in wash water by Ecolab’s patent filings, Tide and Consumer Reports, though no peer-reviewed study has tested that step.[2][5][6] Four popular Korean sunscreens (Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun, SKIN1004 Water-Fit, Round Lab Birch Juice, Isntree Watery Sun Gel) list no avobenzone. Missha’s Essence Sun Milk EX, Abib’s Airy Sunstick and Tocobo’s Vita Airy Sun Primer do, and the US versions of Korean brands sold in US stores are reformulated with it.[8] Nobody has washed a Korean sunscreen out of a T-shirt in a published test, so “Korean sunscreens stain less” is a guess that hasn’t been measured. Zinc and titanium go the other way: white marks on dark fabric.[1]
Why your white collar turned orange (and why you only saw it after the wash)
The stain is invisible when the shirt goes in the hamper. Ecolab, the company that supplies laundry chemistry to hotels and spas, described exactly this in a 2013 patent application for a cleaning composition: sunscreen actives on linens are, in the filing’s words, “not visible prior to wash” and “typically appear on fabrics as yellow patches after washing with detergent-builder combinations at high pH.”[2] Tide’s stain guide calls sunscreen “a combination stain that contains an oily and a rusty component.”[5]
So there are two things on your collar at once. One is the oils and emollients that carry the filter onto your skin and then onto the fabric. The other is whatever the filter itself turns into inside a washing machine. That second part is why the timing feels unfair: you checked the shirt, saw nothing, washed it, and the wash is what developed the color.
The ingredient: avobenzone, the UVA filter US chemical sunscreens depend on
Avobenzone, which appears on labels outside the US under its INCI name, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, is the filter most American chemical sunscreens use to cover long-wave UVA. The US over-the-counter monograph keeps its own list of permitted actives, amended by administrative order, and we printed that list, and what Korea’s longer list adds to it, in why Korean sunscreens use different filters and Tinosorb S vs M. How common is it? CBS News, reporting on the staining complaints in August 2024, put the figure at “more than 600 sunscreen products from over 130 different brands,” citing the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database.[4] We haven’t counted that database ourselves, so treat it as CBS’s number.
Two things about the molecule matter for laundry, and both come from Ecolab’s patent filings rather than from a journal. The 2013 filing says the structure of avobenzone “contains a 1,3-diketone moiety” and “is known to form strong metal complexes.”[2] A second Ecolab patent, filed in 2016, is more careful about what it knows. In its words: “Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is hypothesized that active acidic hydrogens on oxybenzone and avobenzone react with the active components in an alkaline wash solution, forming salts that are highly colored.”[3] We’re keeping that hedge. A patent is a technical document written by a company that sells the fix, and this one says so itself.
Does sunscreen stain clothes? What the only peer-reviewed test we could find measured
We searched PubMed for studies that put sunscreen on fabric and washed it, and found one. In 2018 Michael Ginnetti, Michael Buhnerkempe and Morgan Wilson published a research letter in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology titled “The staining of clothing by sunscreens: A pilot study.”[1] Their method, in their words: “A template was used to guide the placement of 0.2-mL aliquots of 32 commercially available sunscreens onto 3.8-cm test circles on white and dark blue cotton t-shirts. Each sunscreen was tested in triplicate. The shirts were air-dried and machine-washed. Ten blinded observers assigned each test circle a staining score of 0-2.” A score of 2 meant the stain could be seen from 3.05 meters away, a 1 meant it was visible only closer than that, and a 0 meant no stain at any distance.
Then they did the part that answers the ingredient question. Seven individual actives, supplied in the form used for allergy patch testing, plus plain white petrolatum and 40% zinc oxide, were held against a T-shirt in a small chamber for 24 hours. The shirts were washed and scored for the color and strength of whatever was left. Here is the paper’s Table II, using its own symbols: a minus sign for no staining, one plus for faint, two for strong, Y for a yellow stain and W for a white one.

Avobenzone was the only entry in that table to leave a strong yellow mark. Oxybenzone left a faint one. The four other organic filters and the petrolatum left nothing on either shirt. The two minerals did the opposite, and we’ll come back to that.
The 32 products told a messier story, and the authors said so. The products grouped into four clusters by ingredient, and on white shirts the two clusters with little or no mineral filter and more of the organic actives stained significantly more than the two clusters containing zinc oxide. Within that, individual scores ran across the whole scale. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer (avobenzone 3%, with homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene and oxybenzone) scored 0.60 on white and 0.88 on blue. Coppertone Sport 30 Lotion (avobenzone 3%) scored 1.40 on white and 0.27 on blue. CeraVe Baby, a titanium dioxide and zinc oxide formula, scored 0.03 on white and 0.13 on blue. The highest white-shirt score in the study, 1.83, went to an avobenzone spray from Alba Botanica, and the highest blue-shirt scores, also 1.83, went to two products containing zinc oxide.[1] Two products with the same 3% avobenzone landed almost a full point apart on white cotton. “It has avobenzone, so it will stain” is more than this data says.
The authors’ own summary, complete: “In summary, the sunscreens least likely to stain white cotton fabric contained ZnO and lacked avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octocrylene. Products with a high content of ZnO or TiO2 can produce white discoloration on dark fabrics, but discoloration is highly variable according to the specific product, and some formulations have excellent performance on both dark and white fabrics.”[1]
And their stated limits: “Our study is limited by the fact that only 100% cotton fabric was tested; in addition, sunscreens were applied directly to fabric, which differs from real world use.”[1] We’d add three of our own before anyone carries this further. None of the 32 products is a Korean formula. The wash was a plain machine wash, so iron content and hard water were never a variable. And the 10% avobenzone in the ingredient table is a patch-test concentration, above the 3% the avobenzone products in the study contained, which is part of why the product scores are lower and more scattered than the ingredient scores.
Where the orange comes from: iron, hard water, and an alkaline wash
Ginnetti’s team measured yellow. The orange that people actually complain about is one step further on, and here the evidence changes character. No peer-reviewed study we could find has tested sunscreen stains against iron in wash water; PubMed returns nothing for avobenzone paired with iron, and nothing for avobenzone paired with laundry. What exists is industry documentation, and we’ll label it as that every time.
Ecolab’s 2013 patent reports swatch tests and states: “Water with increased iron content causes greater yellow staining from sunscreen products and since distilled water with 0 ppm iron causes no staining, it is evident that iron must be at least one factor causing the yellow staining.”[2] The same filing says that “If the water quality is poor and high levels of iron are present the yellow spots can even become orange in color,” and that “The sunscreen actives combine with the iron in the water to form highly colored complexes.”[2] The 2016 patent adds the wash chemistry. It reports that when textiles are washed in an alkaline solution, “especially when using chlorine bleach,” the yellow stains appear to be set by the high pH and the chlorine, and that “if the wash solution contains iron, reaction with avobenzone and/or oxybenzone can cause the stains to become orange.”[3]
The consumer-facing sources say the same thing in plainer words. Tide: sunscreen can “leave orange, rust-colored stains on your clothes thanks to avobenzone, an ingredient found in sunblock that can react with iron in hard water.”[5] Consumer Reports, in a 2022 piece: “Avobenzone, a sunscreen ingredient that blocks UVA rays, can make your clothes sticky and yellowish if it comes in contact with iron from hard water.”[6] And the sunscreen maker Sun Bum, answering a customer on its own Q&A page as quoted by CBS News (the page itself has since moved): “It’s rare, but that ugly orange tint can happen when Avobenzone (an active ingredient in many sunscreens) mixes with water containing a super high iron content.”[4]
So the picture is a peer-reviewed letter for the yellow, and a detergent maker, a consumer magazine, a sunscreen brand and two patent filings for the iron-and-orange step. That is a fair amount of agreement. It is still short of a study, and we aren’t going to dress it up as one. We also aren’t adding chemistry of our own about which iron complex is which color, because no source we read goes further than the patent’s “1,3-diketone” sentence, and we’d be guessing.
One more thing to keep separate: none of this makes avobenzone a worse sunscreen. A mark on a collar and a filter’s protection on skin are different questions. Avobenzone’s known weakness is that it breaks down in light, which is why US formulas pair it with stabilizers, and a 2014 review on filter photostability noted that “all organic UV filters have the potential to photo-degrade,” then concluded that for the octinoxate-avobenzone pairing “the long-term benefits to humans, i.e., reduction in skin cancers, seem to outweigh any potential adverse consequences attributed to photo-degradation.”[9] If your avobenzone sunscreen works for your skin, this is a laundry problem, and laundry problems have laundry answers. Do Korean sunscreens skip avobenzone? Check the label, not the flag
This is where the K-beauty angle comes in, and where it gets more complicated than “buy Korean.” Korea’s approved filter list is longer than the US one, so Korean formulators have UVA options that US formulators have lacked: Uvinul A Plus, Tinosorb M and others, with Tinosorb S (bemotrizinol) only joining the US list on August 9, 2026 under an exclusivity period (see our bemotrizinol explainer), which we explain one by one in Korean sunscreen filters explained. Many of the Korean sunscreens popular with English-speaking readers use those instead of avobenzone. Many is the operative word. We opened the ingredient listings on INKEEDecoder (the renamed INCIDecoder) on August 21, 2026, and counted only the rows the site tags as sunscreen filters, because the descriptive text on several of these pages mentions avobenzone in passing while the ingredient list itself does not.[8]

Four for four on the popular set, and then three exceptions from the same country. Missha’s Essence Sun Milk EX lists butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane among its five filters. Abib’s Airy Sunstick, which we covered in our Korean sun stick guide, is a homosalate, octocrylene, octisalate and avobenzone formula, and so is Tocobo’s Vita Airy Sun Primer from our Tocobo Vita review. Korean regulation allows avobenzone. It just doesn’t push formulators toward it the way the shorter US list does. “Korean sunscreens don’t use avobenzone” is false as written. “The Korean sunscreens most people here are buying tend to skip it” is closer, and it’s still something to confirm on the label.
Now the part that catches people. If you bought a Korean brand at Ulta, Target or a US Amazon listing, there’s a good chance you didn’t buy the Korean formula. A Korean brand that wants to sell in the US legally has to rebuild the product with filters on the US list, and the US versions of Round Lab’s Birch Juice (sold as UVLOCK), SKIN1004’s Water-Fit Sun Serum, Beauty of Joseon’s Daily Relief SPF 40 and Anua’s Heartleaf sunscreen all list avobenzone, usually with homosalate and octisalate and sometimes octocrylene. We put the two formulas side by side in why a Korean brand’s US formula is a different product. For laundry purposes, a Korean-brand US version is an American sunscreen. Turn the box over, read the Active Ingredients panel, and if avobenzone is on it, everything above applies.
And since we’re being careful: Europe uses avobenzone too. Vichy’s Capital Soleil and La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios UVMune 400, the two European formulas we compared in Korean vs European sunscreen, both list it alongside the Mexoryl filters. So the useful split is less “American versus everyone else” than “formulas with avobenzone versus formulas without,” and the US has been a market where avoiding it is harder.
The other stains: zinc’s white marks, tinted pigments, and plain oil
Switching to a mineral sunscreen trades one stain for another. In Ginnetti’s ingredient table, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide both scored a strong white stain on dark blue cotton, and the two highest blue-shirt scores among the 32 products both went to formulas containing zinc oxide.[1] CBS News put it in consumer terms: “While mineral-based sunscreens don’t produce orange stains on clothing, they tend to leave a white cast on skin.”[4] If your problem is a navy shirt rather than a white one, a zinc sunscreen is the wrong direction. Etude House’s Sunprise Mild Airy Finish, a Korean zinc-only formula, is the kind of product that lands on this side of the table.[8]
Tinted and tone-up sunscreens add a third variable: pigment. Some use iron oxides for color and some use other pigments, and the label doesn’t predict which, as we found when we went through the best Korean tinted sunscreens ingredient by ingredient. We didn’t find a fabric-wash test for tinted sunscreen, so we’re not going to guess at how those pigments behave in a machine.
Then there’s the oil. Every sunscreen, whatever the filter, is carried in oils and emollients, and Tide’s description of sunscreen as “a combination stain that contains an oily and a rusty component” means an avobenzone-free product can still leave the oily half.[5] Clorox’s laundry expert, answering a reader with marks on dark T-shirts, wrote: “I suspect the oily part of the sunblock formula is what remains on your shirts.”[7] That page doesn’t mention avobenzone or iron at all; it’s about grease. A Korean sunscreen without avobenzone can still leave that kind of mark, especially a rich cream, and it responds to grease treatment rather than rust treatment.
How to get it out, according to the people who sell detergent
We haven’t run a laundry test ourselves, and we won’t make up a procedure. What follows is what three sources say, each attributed. They disagree on water temperature, so we’re leaving them separate rather than merging them into a “best method” nobody actually published.
- Tide, five steps: “Brush off any excess from the garment before rinsing under cold, running water.” Pretreat with its stain-release liquid and “let it sit for 5 minutes.” Wash “on the usual cycle, on the hottest wash temperature indicated.” Then the line that matters most: “If the stain persists after washing, repeat the previous steps before tossing in the dryer, as drying will set the stain.”[5]
- Consumer Reports, 2022: “Use a soft toothbrush to remove excess sunscreen before rinsing with cold water. Spray with laundry stain remover and let sit for five to 10 minutes. Then wash as usual.”[6]
- Mary Gagliardi, the stain expert CBS News interviewed, described a “two-step pretreatment regimen to go after the oil first and then color, followed up by machine-washing in at least warm water”: a small amount of liquid dish detergent massaged into the stain for five minutes, rinse, then a non-chlorine stain remover such as Clorox 2 for Colors for ten minutes, then a warm wash, then air-dry and repeat if needed.[4]
- Clorox, on oily marks on dark shirts: air dry and check, because “this is important to not heat-set stubborn oily stains.”[7]
Two points everyone agrees on: keep it out of the dryer until the mark is gone, and deal with the oil. One point only the technical literature makes, and it’s worth knowing if your instinct with a white shirt is to reach for bleach: Ecolab’s 2016 filing says an alkaline wash, “especially when using chlorine bleach,” appears to set the yellow stain.[3] On this particular stain, chlorine bleach is the move the people who study it specifically warn against.
FAQ
Does sunscreen stain clothes permanently?
Not necessarily, but heat makes it harder. Tide’s guide says to repeat treatment before the dryer “as drying will set the stain,” and Clorox’s advice for oily marks is to air dry because “this is important to not heat-set stubborn oily stains.”[5][7] Ecolab’s patent filing adds that an alkaline wash, “especially when using chlorine bleach,” appears to set yellow sunscreen stains.[3] So a stain that has already been dried and bleached is in a worse position than one caught at the first wash. None of the sources we read calls the stain permanent outright.
Which sunscreen ingredient stains clothes?
In the one peer-reviewed fabric test we found, avobenzone at 10% left a strong yellow stain on white cotton and oxybenzone a faint one, while homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene and octinoxate left none; titanium dioxide and zinc oxide left strong white marks on dark blue cotton instead.[1] The orange version of the yellow stain is attributed to iron in wash water by Ecolab’s patents, Tide and Consumer Reports, and oily marks can come from any sunscreen base regardless of filter.[2][5][6][7]
Are Korean sunscreens avobenzone-free?
Not as a category. Four of the most popular Korean sunscreens we checked (Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun, SKIN1004 Water-Fit Sun Serum, Round Lab Birch Juice, Isntree Watery Sun Gel) list no avobenzone, but Missha’s Essence Sun Milk EX, Abib’s Airy Sunstick and Tocobo’s Vita Airy Sun Primer do, and the US-market versions of Korean brands are reformulated with avobenzone.[8] Look for “avobenzone” or “butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane” on the label rather than trusting the brand’s home country.
