UV filters, actives, ratings, and how the numbers are tested.
Ask why Korean sunscreen keeps coming up and the answers you get are usually about ingredients. People type the question already phrased, as why are Korean sunscreens better. We can answer a narrower version of it, and the narrowing is the honest part of this page. Two governments publish documents saying which ingredients may work…
Search for these two filters and you’ll be told, over and over, that one is oil soluble and the other is water soluble. The second half of that is wrong, and the document that proves it is a European safety committee report that lists the water solubility of Tinosorb M’s active molecule as “extremely low…
The American Academy of Dermatology answers this in two sentences. One says what a hybrid sunscreen is. The next says how to check whether you own one, by reading the panel on the container labeled “Active Ingredients.”[1] That second sentence is the useful one, and it’s also the one that stops working the moment the…
Two dates keep showing up in the same sentence, and they’re doing different jobs. The FDA issued its bemotrizinol order in June. The order took effect on August 9, 2026. So what changed on that day, and what hasn’t changed yet? We read the order, all 36 pages of it, so here’s the plain version….
One popular Korean sun serum prints the exact amount of hyaluronic acid it contains, right there in the ingredient list: 0.01 ppm[1]. That’s one part in a hundred million. The word “Hyalu” is in the product’s name. That’s not a scandal, and it isn’t a bad sunscreen. It’s one of our picks below. But it’s…
Turn over a mineral sunscreen and there’s a decent chance you’ll find it printed near the SPF number: non-nano. It looks like a grade somebody awarded in a lab. So here’s a strange fact. The bodies that actually wrote down what “nano” means in a cosmetic, the European Commission, Australia’s TGA and the US FDA,…
You flip a Korean sunscreen over, and the ingredient list reads like a chemistry exam. Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine. Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate. It looks intimidating, but almost all of it comes down to a short list of modern UV filters, most of which your US sunscreen is not even allowed to use. Here is a…
You already scan the SPF number. But right next to it sits something like PA++++, and most people have no idea what those little plus signs are counting. The plus signs are the other half of your sunscreen, and they cover a completely different problem than SPF does. SPF is about burning. PA is about…
A water resistant sunscreen is not waterproof. How the FDA tests the 40 and 80 minute claims, why waterproof is banned, and when you really need to reapply.
Pick up a Korean sunscreen, or scroll the reviews for one, and you’ll hit two words that sound like a health verdict: organic and inorganic. To an English speaker an “organic sunscreen” sounds natural, gentle, maybe even the kind of thing with a leaf on the box. The same split shows up in Korean as…
