Celimax Oil Control Light Sunscreen Review: What’s Actually Doing the Mattifying

An oil-control sunscreen is usually sold on its powders. This one’s ingredient list points somewhere else first.
The short version: the Celimax Oil Control review worth doing is the one that asks which ingredients earn the “oil control” in the name. It’s a hybrid: zinc oxide is second on the list and titanium dioxide is nineteenth, alongside three current-generation chemical filters.[1] Mineral filters look matte by nature, so a meaningful part of the finish is coming from the UV filters themselves rather than from absorbent powders. And unusually for a mattifying sunscreen, it is flagged alcohol-free.[1]
What’s actually in it?
Five UV filters, and the mix is the interesting part.

The absorbent ingredients people expect to be the story are there, but lower down: methyl methacrylate crosspolymer at twelve and silica at thirty-seven, out of thirty-eight.[1]
So where does the matte finish come from?
Partly the powders, and partly the fact that two of its filters are minerals.
It’s what the list says: a formula whose second ingredient is zinc oxide will tend to look matte before you add anything designed to absorb oil. If you want the technique side of keeping a finish matte through a day, our oily-skin technique piece is more useful than any single product.
Will I see a white cast?
Possibly. Two mineral filters is two more than a purely chemical formula has.
We can’t tell you how much, because that depends on your skin tone and how much you apply. What we can say is that the mechanism is present here in a way it isn’t in an all-chemical sunscreen, and our white cast article explains which filters do it and which picks avoid them.
What isn’t in it that I’d expect?
Two absences worth naming, because neither is typical for this category.
The list carries an alcohol-free flag, and alcohol is the usual shortcut to a fast, matte-feeling dry-down.[1] Neither fragrance nor essential oils appear in the list, and INCIDecoder flags it accordingly.[1] What that does and does not promise is covered in our fragrance-free piece.
There’s niacinamide at position ten, with no percentage printed.[1] Position tells you order, not dose, which is the same caution we set out in our piece on actives in sunscreen.
What are the two mattifying entries, read at their own pages?
Microbeads at twelve, and a white powder at thirty-seven.
Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer is filed under absorbent/mattifier, and its page describes “Porous spherical microbeads (tiny little balls) that can give an elegant silky texture to the products”, which are “also used to scatter light to reduce the look of fine lines on the skin, as well as to absorb excess oil and give a matt finish”.[4] Silica carries two filings, viscosity controlling and absorbent/mattifier, and reads as “A white powdery thing that’s the major component of glass and sand” which turns up where a product is meant to “keep your skin matte as it has great oil-absorbing abilities”.[5]
Two neighboring entries of that kind are filed elsewhere. Polymethylsilsesquioxane at eighteen is “A spherical texturizing powder” working as a “texture enhancer and soft focus agent”.[6] Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate at sixteen has no what-it-does line at all, and the regulatory entry reproduced beneath it reads “calcium aluminium borosilicate is a glass consisting essentially of calcium and aluminium borosilicates”, filed under bulking.[7] Of those four entries, only two carry that tag.
What holds five filters in one bottle?
A salicylate solvent at eighth, and a clay thickener at twentieth.
Butyloctyl Salicylate is tagged a solvent rather than a filter, and the ingredient page calls it “especially useful in sunscreens” because “It can solubilize some commonly used UV-filters like Oxybenzone or Avobenzone and it can also help to increase the SPF rating of sunscreens”.[8] Read the two names in that sentence: neither oxybenzone nor avobenzone appears among these 38, so the page’s examples are not the filters this formula carries. Disteardimonium Hectorite is twentieth and Magnesium Sulfate twenty-first, both filed under viscosity controlling. The hectorite page calls it “An organic derivative of hectorite clay” whose “most popular use in cosmetics is in sunscreens”, then adds that “According to the manufacturer info, it is a real multi-tasker”, with abilities including “prevent pigments settling during storage”, “stabilizing a formula for longer”, “creating a light and smooth skin feel” and “enhancing the water-resistance of sunscreen formulas”.[9] That attribution belongs to the supplier and we have left it attached. Nothing on the page measures what this particular bottle does in water.
The other Celimax with “Oil Control” on the front
A sun stick, and it gets there differently.
Those same six searches turned up Celimax Oil Control Mattifying Sun Stick, a separate product with a separate entry, uploaded 05/17/2025 and running to 44 names.[10] Four filters there, every one of them organic: Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate eleventh, Ethylhexyl Triazone twelfth, Polysilicone-15 sixteenth, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine nineteenth. The list carries no entry for Zinc Oxide and none for Titanium Dioxide.[10]
The powders are placed differently. Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer is transcribed three times over, at five, six and eight, with Silica seventeenth.[10] One brand, one pair of words on the front, two routes to a matte finish: absorbent beads near the top of the stick, against two minerals here with the beads further down. Two more products carry the line name and are not sunscreens at all: an Oil Control Capsule Essence and an Oil Control Moisturizing Cream.[2]
Which listing is this, and does it match the one on sale?
One entry, and its 38 names run in the same sequence as the shop page our link opens.
Ingredient databases carry duplicates. A single sunscreen can appear under two or three entries with different totals, and reading the wrong one shifts every position in a review like this. So the name went through INCIDecoder search six ways: celimax, celimax oil, celimax oil control, celimax sunscreen, oil control light, and oil control light sunscreen. Under this exact product name all six returned the same single entry, with no renewal page and no numbered second copy.[2] The entry itself carries a line reading “Uploaded by: annarie on 01/24/2024”.[2]
What decides a version, though, is retail. Our affiliate link opens a YesStyle page for the 40ml single, and that page carries a Major Ingredients block of its own. Line the two up and every name occupies the same slot, first entry to last.[3]
Two limits belong with that. YesStyle states one itself: “Ingredients subject to change at manufacturer’s discretion. For the most complete and up-to-date list of ingredients, please refer to product packaging.”[3] A second limit is what agreement between a shop and a database can mean. Both parties are reading a declaration the manufacturer published, so their agreement shows the transcription is consistent. An upload date records when somebody typed it in, not when a formula last changed.
What the seller’s copy claims, and what the list can check
Two claims on the shop page, and the ingredient list settles neither.
The first is the complex. YesStyle’s description reads, “Infused with patented ingredient Anti Sebum-P, the formula, effectively controls excess sebum production”.[3] Nothing among the 38 names is called that, and nothing could be. A supplier complex reaches an INCI declaration only through the names of its members, so a shopper cannot say which entries belong to it, how many there are, or what share of the bottle they come to.
The second is finish. The same page promises a “white cast-free finish”.[3] What a list can record is that two of the five filters are minerals, one of them in position two, and that is where its evidence runs out. Whether any of it shows on a given face turns on skin tone and on how thickly the product goes on. No declaration answers that.
Neither point is an accusation, and both claims may hold. They come from the party selling the bottle, and this review stays with what a declared list can be checked against.
Should I buy this one?
Worth it if you want a matte finish from a formula flagged alcohol-free, and a cast is something you can live with. Check the price on YesStyle.

Am I getting the oil control from the powders?
Only partly. Two of its five filters are minerals, and mineral filters look matte on their own before any absorbent powder is added.
Am I getting alcohol in this for a fast dry-down?
No. It is flagged alcohol-free, which is unusual for a mattifying sunscreen.
Will I see a white cast at my skin tone?
It might. It has zinc oxide second and titanium dioxide nineteenth, so the mechanism is there. How visible it is depends on your tone and your dose.
How much niacinamide am I getting?
The label doesn’t say. It’s tenth on the list with no percentage printed.
Can I use this if fragrance bothers me?
Yes. Neither fragrance nor essential oils appear in the list.
