Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Ingredients: The Rice Number Is Gone, the Ferments Remain
Half of the name survives a look at the earlier list. The other half ends it.
The short version: on the earlier list, the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun ingredients back up one of the two things named on the tube. There, rice extract is second, printed at 30%.[1] The “probiotics” are six ferments, and three of them are ingredients 39, 40 and 41 of 41.[1] Both halves are on that list. They’re just not doing the same amount of work. The tube on sale now is called Relief Sun: Rice + Niacinamide, and its list puts rice extract twentieth, with no percentage printed.[2] Unless we say otherwise, every position below is from the earlier list.
This is an ingredient-label analysis, based on the sources at the end rather than a wear test of our own (see how we work).
Does the rice claim hold up?
On the earlier list it does, and it’s the easier half to check on the label. The current list prints no percentage beside rice extract and puts it twentieth.[2]
On the earlier list, rice extract sits at second with 30% printed beside it.[1] Most ingredient lists print no percentage at all, so a number beside an ingredient turns a marketing word into something verifiable. Our actives piece explains why a position on its own tells you far less than a number does.
There’s a second rice ingredient as well: rice germ extract, at fifteenth.[1]
Where are the probiotics?
Six ferments, running from seventeenth to dead last.
| Ferment | Position of 41 |
|---|---|
| Lactobacillus/Pumpkin Ferment Extract | 17 |
| Bacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract | 18 |
| Monascus/Rice Ferment | 23 |
| Lactobacillus/Rice Ferment | 39 |
| Aspergillus Ferment | 40 |
| Saccharomyces/Rice Ferment Filtrate | 41 |
The bottom three lines of the whole list are all ferments.[1] None of the six carries a percentage.[1]
That isn’t a fault. Extracts and ferments are commonly used at low levels, and that’s a formulating choice. What it does mean is that, on the earlier list, the two words on the front are supported very differently: one has a number beside it near the top, the other has no number anywhere.
What else is high on the list?
Four filters and niacinamide, all inside the first twelve.
| Position | Filter | Also called |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate | Uvinul A Plus |
| 7 | Ethylhexyl Triazone | Uvinul T 150 |
| 9 | Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol | Tinosorb M |
| 12 | Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone | Uvasorb HEB |
Niacinamide is eighth.[1] New to these trade names? Our filter guide has what each of them absorbs.
Will it leave a white cast?
Tinosorb M is ninth, and that’s the filter to watch.
There’s no zinc oxide and no titanium dioxide here, so there’s no mineral filter to cause one.[1] Among chemical filters, Tinosorb M is the one that acts closest to a mineral. How visible that turns out to be varies with tone, and with how much of it goes on. Our white cast piece covers which filters show and names the same exception.
Is it fragrance free and alcohol free?
The current list includes T-Butyl Alcohol.[2] Both flags are on the earlier list.
Both an alcohol-free flag and a fragrance and essential oil free flag are attached to it.[1] Behenyl alcohol at twenty-five is the only ingredient on that list with alcohol in its name, and it’s the fatty kind, used to thicken.[1] Our fragrance-free piece goes through how much the fragrance-free label actually promises.
One Korean reviewer bought this one and wrote it up. There’s nothing in it about the ingredient order, and the reviewer has dry skin and was using it in January, so take it as one person on how it wears rather than a verdict on the list.
So is the name misleading?
Not on the earlier list. The distinction is narrower than that.
Both of the things named are genuinely on the list. On the earlier list, one of them is second with a number attached; three of the others are the final three lines. If the rice is why you’re reaching for this tube, the current list puts rice extract twentieth with no number beside it. If the probiotics are why, what six ferments at those positions do on skin is a question the list can’t answer.
Is this the tube for you?
Buy it for four modern filters and niacinamide.
Choose differently if Tinosorb M is a problem for you, or if the ferments were the reason you were reaching for it. For picks by skin type, our sensitive skin piece is a better starting point than one product.
