Four passes back and forth. That is the number most guides give when they explain how much sunscreen stick to apply. Four passes sounds quick and manageable, and that is exactly the problem. When a chemist weighed what Korean sun sticks actually deposit on skin, three layers and roughly 34 passes still reached only 84% of the amount needed for full labeled protection.

The short version: The American Academy of Dermatology recommends four passes of a sunscreen stick per area.[1] When Michelle Wong, a PhD chemist who writes Lab Muffin Beauty Science, weighed three Korean SPF 50+ sun sticks before and after applying them to her face, one generous layer (about nine passes) delivered 38% of the amount needed to match the labeled SPF, putting ballpark estimated protection around SPF 19 assuming a linear relationship.[2] Getting to 84% of the required amount took roughly 34 passes. A sun stick is still a valuable tool, because it makes midday reapplication something you actually do, but what one layer delivers is less than what most people assume.

Where four passes comes from

The American Academy of Dermatology’s guidance for sunscreen sticks is to apply four passes back and forth on each area of skin, then rub it in for an even layer.[1] That instruction comes from a demonstration context, not from a study that measured how much product four passes deposit or how that amount compares to what an SPF test assumes.

An SPF value is measured at a specific density: 2 milligrams of product per square centimeter of skin.[3] That density is written into the test method used by labs worldwide. Whether four passes of a given stick reach that density is a question the AAD did not answer, because the recommendation was about technique rather than dosimetry.

The gap between the instruction and the measurement is the subject of this article.

What a chemist measured

Michelle Wong tested three Korean sun sticks by weighing each stick on a precision scale before and after applying it to her face.[2] The method is straightforward: the weight lost by the stick is the weight gained by the skin. She used three products, all rated SPF 50+:

  • Tocobo Cotton Soft Sun Stick
  • Abib Quick Sunstick Protection Bar
  • Benton Mineral Sun Stick

For her face, she calculated that reaching the test density of 2 mg/cm² requires approximately 0.76 grams of product. Then she applied each stick in successive layers, weighing after each, and recorded how many passes each layer took. The SPF estimates below assume a linear relationship between the amount applied and the resulting SPF, which Wong describes as “very ballpark numbers,” not precise measurements.[2]

A generous first application, the kind where you feel like you have put on a solid layer, delivered about 38% of what the SPF test assumes. The estimated protection from that layer is around SPF 19, from a product labeled SPF 50+. Getting to 84% of the required amount took roughly 34 passes, and the estimated SPF at that point was around 42. The data stopped at three layers; reaching 100% would require further passes, though the exact count was not measured.

The variation between products was large. On the arm, which allows a more controlled measurement, the Tocobo stick reached a full dose in roughly 16 to 21 passes, while the Abib stick required 40 to 64 passes.[2] Wax density and formulation dictate how much product transfers per swipe, and that varies from one stick to the next.

Why sticks deposit less per pass

A sunscreen stick is a solid bar of wax holding UV filters. As you press and drag, body heat melts the surface layer and a thin film transfers to skin. That transfer mechanism is fundamentally different from squeezing a cream onto your fingers and rubbing it in. With cream, you control the amount by how much you squeeze out. With a stick, you control it by how many times you swipe, and each swipe leaves a thinner layer than most people expect.

The SPF test itself is part of the mismatch. Labs apply sunscreen at 2 mg/cm² using a finger cot, spreading it as evenly as possible across a marked test site.[3] No consumer uses a stick that way. The test density is a lab condition that produces the SPF number, and it is the same for every format: cream, lotion, spray, and stick. What changes is how easily each format reaches that density in practice.

Does this mean sticks are not worth using?

No. A sun stick solves a different problem than a cream does, and solving it matters.

A UV photography study tracked 35 people’s sunscreen coverage over the course of a day and found that forehead coverage dropped to 51%, down from 71% in the morning, with the under-eye area and forehead losing the most protection.[4] Reapplication rates are low even among professionals. A survey of 154 UK-based dermatology clinicians found that only 10.4% reported applying SPF more than once daily.[4]

The convenience of a sun stick, no mirror, no mess, no hand-washing, is what makes midday reapplication something that actually happens. A thin layer reapplied is better than a thick layer imagined. How to get more from your sun stick

The practical response to this data is not to abandon sticks. It is to adjust how you use them.

  • Start your morning with cream or fluid. Your first coat of the day is when full coverage matters most, and a squeeze bottle lets you measure out the right amount. Our sunscreen amount guide has the numbers. Save the stick for later reapplication.
  • Go over each area more than four times. Cover each zone the way you would fill in a shape with a wax crayon: overlap your strokes until you can see the product sitting on your skin, then press it flat. If four passes look like nothing happened, keep going.
  • Press, do not rub. After swiping, use clean fingertips to press the product into your skin rather than rubbing it around. Rubbing can displace what you just applied.
