Korean Sunscreen for Men: Your Skin Is Not Thicker Where It Counts
In a 2013 survey of more than 4,000 Americans, 18.1% of men reported regularly applying sunscreen to their face when spending an hour or more in warm sunshine. For women, the figure was 42.6%.[1] Meanwhile, the age-adjusted melanoma mortality rate for men is 2.9 per 100,000, compared to 1.3 for women, a gap of 2.23 to one.[2] If you have ever heard that male skin is thicker and therefore tougher against the sun, it is worth knowing that the claim traces back through seven review papers and stops at zero measurement studies.
The short version: Men use sunscreen at less than half the rate women do,[1] and the melanoma death rate for men is more than double that of women.[2] The idea that male skin is 25% thicker and therefore more UV-resistant has no primary source. When researchers measured the stratum corneum, the outermost layer that UV hits first, they found no difference between men and women (p = 0.61), and that layer contributes only about 11% of the skin’s total photoprotection.[3] The biggest barriers men report are greasiness, stinging eyes, and time.[4] The right Korean sunscreen for men addresses all three: lightweight textures, matte finishes, and stick formats that take seconds.
The numbers you should know
The most cited data on the sunscreen gender gap comes from a CDC-affiliated survey published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2015.[1] Among 4,033 adults surveyed through the 2013 Summer ConsumerStyles panel, 18.1% of men (95% CI: 15.8–20.6) reported regularly using sunscreen on their face during warm-weather outdoor exposure of an hour or more. For women, the figure was 42.6% (95% CI: 39.5–46.7). The gap is 2.35 to one.
A separate 2021 survey of 705 American men aged 20 to 70 found that only 17.1% used sunscreen daily.[5] When asked why, the top motivation was skin cancer risk reduction at 82%, followed by wanting to look younger at 42%.
The cancer data is equally clear. According to SEER, the age-adjusted melanoma incidence rate is 28.3 per 100,000 for men and 17.9 for women, a ratio of 1.58.[2] The mortality ratio is steeper: 2.9 versus 1.3, or 2.23 to one. The American Cancer Society estimates approximately 65,400 new male melanoma cases and 5,500 male melanoma deaths in 2026.[6]
One number that does not belong in this section: the claim that male melanoma is surging. The ACS reports that among men under 50, invasive melanoma incidence has been declining by about 1% per year.[6]
Reapplication rates show the same pattern. In a 1999 Queensland survey of 669 beachgoers, 66% of women reported reapplying sunscreen during their visit, compared to 55% of men.[7] That study is old and Australian, but a more recent figure specific to American men comes from the Wickenheiser survey: among 137 male participants, only 37.5% reported reapplying every two hours always or often.[4]
The “thicker skin” myth has no source
Search for “men’s skin is 25% thicker” and you will find it everywhere: skincare brands, dermatology blogs, grooming magazines. We traced the citation chain through Europe PMC and PubMed. It leads through seven review articles, each citing another review, and none of them pointing to a measurement study that produced the 25% figure. The earliest name commonly attached to it is Shuster 1975. That paper found lower collagen in females (and notes a direct relationship between collagen and dermal thickness) but gives no percentage and did not measure the stratum corneum, the outer layer UV hits first.[3]
What we did find is a study that measured something more relevant. Lock-Andersen and colleagues measured the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis and the first barrier UV radiation encounters. In 73 subjects, they found no sex difference in stratum corneum thickness (p = 0.61). More importantly, they measured the total photoprotection contributed by that layer: an average of 11%. The remaining 89% of the skin’s UV defense comes from melanin pigmentation, which correlated strongly with photoprotection (r = 0.83).[3]
The cellular epidermis is thicker in males, as Sandby-Møller and colleagues confirmed in 2003 (p < 0.0001), and male skin is likely thicker in the dermis as well.[8] But the dermis sits below the layers that UV penetrates first, and the cellular epidermis is not the stratum corneum. The part of the skin that UV hits first shows no sex difference, and even if it did, it accounts for only 11% of the skin’s natural defense.
The practical implication: thickness is not a shield. Pigmentation and sunscreen are.
What men actually want from sunscreen
In 2013, Wickenheiser and colleagues surveyed 137 men in a drum corps about their sunscreen use.[4] The top three barriers were greasy or oily feel (71.4%), stinging or dripping into eyes (57.9%), and taking too long to apply (50.4%). A follow-up with 31 in-person interviews confirmed these priorities: men wanted something fast, non-greasy, and invisible.
This is where Korean sunscreens fit. Most Korean SPF 50+ products are formulated as lightweight fluids or gels that absorb quickly and leave a matte or semi-matte finish. They were not designed for men specifically, but the properties that Korean consumers demand, fast absorption, no white cast, minimal residue, happen to match the exact barriers men cite.

The simplest possible routine
There are two steps. Not ten.
- Morning, after washing your face: Apply a lightweight SPF 50+ sunscreen. Use the two-finger rule, two lines of product along your index and middle fingers, to get close to the tested dose. If you use a moisturizer, sunscreen goes on top. If your moisturizer already contains SPF 50+, that counts as your morning coat.
- Midday or afternoon: Reapply with a sun stick. No mirror needed. Press and swipe across the areas that lose coverage fastest: forehead, nose, and cheeks. This takes about 30 seconds.
After shaving: wait until any irritation settles, then apply sunscreen. If your skin stings from a product, try a fragrance-free option. A sun stick also skips the rubbing step on freshly shaved skin.

Frequently asked questions
Do men need different sunscreen than women?
No. Sunscreen is chosen by skin type and lifestyle, not by sex. The properties men tend to prefer, matte finish, fast absorption, and no white cast, overlap with what people with oily skin look for regardless of gender. You do not need a product labeled “for men” to get those qualities.
How often should men reapply sunscreen?
Every two hours during sustained outdoor exposure. If you spend most of the day indoors, one midday reapplication with a sun stick is a practical minimum. The reapplication rate among men in the Wickenheiser survey was low: only 37.5% reported applying every two hours always or often.[4] A stick format makes it more likely to happen.
Is SPF 30 enough or do I need 50?
SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB radiation; SPF 50 blocks approximately 98%. The difference is real but small. What matters more than the number on the label is whether you applied enough product and whether you reapplied. Most Korean sunscreens are rated SPF 50+ PA++++ because Korean consumers expect it, so you are unlikely to encounter a Korean sunscreen rated below SPF 50.
