Is Sunscreen Bad for You? Ten Claims, Ranked by What the Evidence Actually Shows

Is sunscreen bad for you? In 2026 that stopped being a fringe question. The American Academy of Dermatology’s Practice Safe Sun survey (1,132 U.S. adults, polled online in early 2026) reported “more than 16 million adults reporting reducing or stopping sunscreen use because of online claims,” a figure the AAD estimated from a national survey.[6] A second survey, 2,000 U.S. adults polled by Atomik Research for the Melanoma Research Alliance that spring, found 53% had seen claims that sunscreen ingredients may be harmful and 38% don’t believe sunscreen is safe and effective.[7]

The platforms themselves look different from the panic. A 2026 study in PLOS Digital Health coded 971 of the most viewed sunscreen TikToks and found that 86.8% promoted sunscreen use, 6.0% contained critiques, and 1.5% asserted that sunscreen causes harm; the critiques drew significantly more likes, shares and comments than the promotions.[9] A small share of what is posted, a large share of what gets engaged with: that is how a question grows. Below are ten of those claims, each graded by what the evidence actually shows, with a link to the article where we worked through it.

In one paragraph: Of the ten claims below, four were tested directly and the result went the other way: the melanoma trial, the European and Australian nano-zinc reviews, the sunscreen-pill trials, and the homemade-recipe measurements. Four are real signals narrower than the claims made from them: blood absorption, a 5.2 nmol/L vitamin D gap in one trial, coral toxicity in the lab, and benzene in some 2021 lots. One is an open question that regulators are still asking, the hormone activity of oxybenzone. And one, “chemical is dangerous, mineral is safe,” is not supported as a safety ranking by anything the FDA or the AAD has published. None of that adds up to a blanket safety verdict, and we are not issuing one; it adds up to ten separate answers.

How we graded the ten claims

The letter grades are our editorial reading, not a published scale; treat them as a way of sorting the claims, not as findings of their own.

  • Grade A, tested, and the result went the other way. A randomized trial or a full regulatory review tested the claim itself and the result ran opposite. Not “proven safe”; the specific claim failed its test.
  • Grade B, real signal, narrower than the claim. The factual core is true, but what was measured is smaller or narrower than the claim made from it.
  • Grade C, open question; regulators are still asking. Regulators asked for data and have not concluded; the reviews end in hedges rather than verdicts.
  • Grade D, unsupported as stated. The sentence creates a safety ranking the evidence does not contain, even where a real regulatory distinction lies underneath.

Grade A: tested, and the result went the other way

Claim: sunscreen causes cancer

The claim has two legs: that the filters cause melanoma, and that melanoma rates climbed over the same decades sunscreen use did. The first leg was tested in one randomized trial, run in Nambour, Queensland with 1,621 adults. A decade after it ended, the group assigned to daily use had 3 invasive melanomas against 11 in the group that used sunscreen at its own discretion (HR 0.27), while all melanomas, 11 versus 22, landed just outside significance at P = .051. Basal cell carcinoma did not go down. The second leg is also real: pooled cohort studies show melanoma 27% higher among sunscreen users, a pattern their meta-analysis attributes to confounding by indication, meaning the people who burn most reach for sunscreen most. Grade A: the claim went to a trial and the trial ran the other way; not a safety certificate, since the cohort signal and the BCC result are both on the record. Claim: nano particles in mineral sunscreen get into your body

The worry is that particles milled small enough to rub in clear end up in living skin or in blood. The EU’s consumer safety committee, the SCCS, reviewed the zinc oxide data and found nothing to indicate the particles pass through skin into living tissue; the same opinion adds that non-nano raises no additional safety concern compared with nano. Australia’s TGA reviewed the question for its own market. So “non-nano” is not the safer choice on the skin route; the two forms come out even. Sprays and powders, where particles can be inhaled, are excluded from that approval, and the exclusion is part of the grade. The opinions and the FDA’s 2014 guidance are in nano vs non-nano zinc.

Claim: a pill can replace sunscreen

Supplements built around Polypodium leucotomos extract do raise the dose of UV needed to redden skin: before-and-after ratios run up to about 1.31. Fed into the SPF formula, protected dose over unprotected dose, that comes out near 1.3, a conversion we did ourselves and that none of the papers printed. The AAD asks for SPF 30. A randomized trial from 2026, run by authors with no conflicts to declare, recorded a 26% rise in the redness threshold with no fall in DNA damage markers: less red is not the same as less damaged. The FDA’s 2018 position, that no pill or capsule can replace sunscreen, has that footing under it. Grade A: the replacement claim was measured and the number came back near 1, though “does nothing” would overstate the other way. The trial table is in do sunscreen pills work.

Claim: homemade sunscreen works

The SPF numbers in online recipes come from ingredient tables, not from measuring the finished cream. When a pharmacy lab in Nantes made fifteen such recipes and measured them, three had no UV filter in them at all and the other twelve came in with an SPF under 6. Coconut oil, the usual star of these recipes, scored 1.2 when measured on human skin. A single recipe was tested on human skin samples, and sunburn cells did not drop significantly. That is the claim tested directly, and it failed. Our article reprints no recipes and offers no how-to, just the measurements, in homemade sunscreen, tested.

Grade B: the part that is true, and how far it goes

Claim: sunscreen chemicals get into your blood

True, and it is the FDA’s own data. Its maximal-use studies, which ran in JAMA in 2019 and 2020, showed oxybenzone, avobenzone, octocrylene and other filters reaching the bloodstream after normal application, above 0.5 ng/mL, the threshold the agency set as a trigger for further testing. Where the claim overreaches is the next step: that 0.5 line is a testing trigger, not a toxicity line, and no study has connected those blood levels to a health problem. The FDA asked manufacturers for more data, and its consumer page still tells people to keep using sunscreen.[3] Grade B: absorption settled, harm not shown. Claim: sunscreen causes vitamin D deficiency

This one has a randomized trial from 2025. The Sun-D trial had one group put on SPF 50+ every day the UV index hit 3 or above for a year, the other using sunscreen as it pleased. By the end, the daily group’s blood vitamin D had risen 5.2 nmol/L less than the control group’s. Note the verb: both groups went up. Deficiency stood at 45.7% in the sunscreen group against 36.9% in the control group. The authors did not conclude “wear less”; they concluded that regular users may need a supplement. The signal is real, about nine percentage points wide, neither nothing nor a crisis, and it updates an older review that found no effect in field trials near SPF 16. Both are in sunscreen and vitamin D.

Claim: sunscreen kills coral reefs

Oxybenzone is toxic to coral in laboratory tanks at high concentrations; NOAA documents it. What the tanks do not show is the ocean. Seawater at popular sites measured about 1 to 10 μg/L in the 2022 National Academies review, far below the lab doses, and the driver of mass bleaching is warming water. Hawaii’s ban on oxybenzone and octinoxate is a precaution taken under uncertainty, not a finding that sunscreen killed a reef. Mineral is not a clean exit either: no sunscreen of any type carries a certified “reef-safe” status, because no agency certifies one. Grade B: the toxicity is real; the scale of the claim is not. Claim: sunscreen has benzene in it

Benzene did turn up in sunscreens in 2021, and products were recalled. Two details change what that means. The reason logged in the FDA’s enforcement database is “Chemical Contamination,” benzene arriving as a manufacturing contaminant rather than an ingredient, and the recalled lots included mineral products as well as chemical ones. The recalls were lot-specific rather than brand-wide, and sunscreens were 8 of the 114 benzene recalls in that database. The Johnson & Johnson entry is still marked “Ongoing,” and the FDA’s advice is not to use recalled sunscreens.[3] Grade B: the contamination happened; “sunscreen has benzene in it,” as a statement about the category, does not follow. Grade C: the one regulators are still asking about

Claim: sunscreen disrupts hormones (oxybenzone)

This claim has the most live science behind it, and the honest answer is “not settled.” Oxybenzone, benzophenone-3 on labels, is one of the twelve filters the FDA proposed as Category III (more data wanted) in its 2019 rule, citing its systemic absorption and “questions raised in the published literature regarding the potential for endocrine activity in connection with systemic oxybenzone exposure.”[1] It repeated the request in 2021 and spelled out what it was not saying: “This proposed order does not represent a conclusion by the FDA that the sunscreen active ingredients proposed as having insufficient data are unsafe for use in sunscreens.”[2] A 2023 review for the European HBM4EU program, with a meta-analysis of biomonitoring studies, concluded that these benzophenones “present endocrine disrupting properties,” while describing the supporting human data as “still limited” and adding that “individuals should not refrain from sunscreen use.”[4] The EU responded in 2022 by lowering the permitted concentration in body creams and sprays from 6% to 2.2%, not by banning it.[5] On pregnancy specifically, our pregnancy-safe sunscreen article covers the lab-and-animal signal and the absence of any proven harm to a human pregnancy; we won’t repeat it here. Grade D: “chemical sunscreen is dangerous, only mineral is safe”

The sentence sounds like a summary of the FDA’s position, so read what the FDA proposed. In 2019, and again in 2021, the agency proposed that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are GRASE, generally recognized as safe and effective; that PABA and trolamine salicylate are not; and that twelve other filters, including avobenzone, octocrylene, homosalate and oxybenzone, need “additional data” before a GRASE call can be made.[1][2] That is a difference in data categories, not a safety ranking, and the FDA’s Q&A says as much in the sentence quoted above.[2] The AAD’s reading of the same record: “While the FDA is asking for more data, it does not say that the ingredients are unsafe. It does not ask the public to stop using sunscreens that contain any of these ingredients.”[10] Our absorption article makes the logical point: chemical filters haven’t been shown to be harmful in the first place, so calling mineral “the safe one” by contrast has nothing to stand on, and organic vs inorganic sunscreen reaches the same place from the chemistry side. Preferring mineral is still reasonable, for sensitive skin, pregnancy peace of mind, or the finish, and our Korean mineral picks exist for that reader. Is sunscreen toxic? Where the real uncertainty is

The genuine open item is the FDA’s list of twelve. The 2019 proposed rule named them as “cinoxate, dioxybenzone, ensulizole, homosalate, meradimate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, padimate O, sulisobenzone, oxybenzone, or avobenzone” and said plainly that the proposal “does not represent a conclusion by FDA that the sunscreen active ingredients included in the Stayed 1999 Final Monograph but proposed here as Category III are unsafe for use in sunscreens.”[1] The 2021 proposed order carried the list forward; the FDA’s Q&A page, last updated in December 2022, still describes it as proposed.[2] Meanwhile its consumer page notes that “In June 2026, FDA added bemotrizinol as a permitted active ingredient for use in sunscreens,” a filter Korean and European formulas already use; what that changes is in the bemotrizinol effective date.[3] The same FDA page says “Consumers should continue to use sunscreen, along with other sun protection measures, to reduce risks from sun exposure.”[3] The AAD goes further, in its own voice: “the science doesn’t show that any sunscreen ingredients currently available in the U.S. are harmful to human health.”[10] That is the AAD’s sentence, not the FDA’s; the gap between “more data needed” and “not shown to be harmful” is the width of the open question.

Why is sunscreen bad for you? How that question grew in 2026

The claims are old. What changed is how many people hear them and from whom. In the AAD’s 2026 survey, 57% of Americans regularly use sunscreen, one-third got a sunburn in the past year, 21% rely on Instagram or TikTok influencers for skincare advice, 36% of Gen Z name those influencers as their primary source, and “Nearly half of all Americans, and 64% of Gen Z, report encountering sunscreen misinformation online” (Versta Research; stated maximum margin of error ±3%).[6] The Melanoma Research Alliance survey found 59% concerned about what is in sunscreen and only about a third able to explain the difference between types (margin of error ±2 points).[7] An earlier Ipsos poll for Orlando Health found one in seven adults under 35 rating daily sunscreen as more harmful than direct sun; exact wording in the FAQ below.[8]

The TikTok study is the corrective in both directions. Its authors wrote that “Contrary to claims that TikTok is rife with sunscreen misinformation, our findings indicate that such content constitutes a small portion of the most viewed videos,” while the critique-only videos still drew significantly higher engagement in likes, shares and comments.[9] A claim does not need a platform full of misinformation to travel; a few posts shared more than the rest will do. What about Korean sunscreens?

Searches like “safest Korean sunscreen” land here, so briefly. Korea’s cosmetics rules approve a different, longer list of UV filters than the FDA’s monograph, and that list is most of why the textures and filter names look unfamiliar. Different is the word, not safer: no regulator has ranked Korean sunscreens above anyone else’s, and we are not going to. Is sunscreen bad for you? Where this leaves you

Ten claims, four grades, no blanket verdict. The claims tested head-on came back the other way; the ones with a true core turned out smaller than their headlines. The open question, oxybenzone, stays open at the regulator, and the fix for anyone avoiding it is an ingredient list, not skipping sunscreen. The one ranking, chemical versus mineral, is a preference wearing a safety claim’s clothes. Is sunscreen more harmful than the sun?

In a 2024 Ipsos poll for the Orlando Health Cancer Institute, about one in seven adults under 35 (14%) thought daily sunscreen use is more harmful to the skin than direct sun exposure.[8] The only randomized trial to test sunscreen against melanoma found fewer invasive melanomas with daily use, 3 against 11, a decade on; basal cell carcinoma was not reduced, and no trial is a safety certificate for every ingredient. Which sunscreen ingredients is the FDA still reviewing?

Twelve, as named in the FDA’s 2019 proposed rule: “cinoxate, dioxybenzone, ensulizole, homosalate, meradimate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, padimate O, sulisobenzone, oxybenzone, or avobenzone.”[1] The agency wants more safety data on these before it decides whether they keep their GRASE status, and it has said the request “does not represent a conclusion by the FDA that the sunscreen active ingredients proposed as having insufficient data are unsafe for use in sunscreens.”[2] Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide were proposed as GRASE; PABA and trolamine salicylate as not GRASE.[2]

Do Korean sunscreens contain oxybenzone?

The ones we have covered mostly don’t, but check the label rather than the category. Our reef-safe article puts it this way: “most modern Korean sunscreens never used oxybenzone in the first place,” and our absorption article adds that “most newer Korean and global formulas already dropped it.” Neither is a promise about every bottle; the same article notes a Korean formula that uses octinoxate, the other filter Hawaii restricted.
