Best Korean Mineral Sunscreen: Six Picks, Checked Listing by Listing

Here’s a shortcut nobody hands you when you go looking for the best korean mineral sunscreen: the question has a legal answer in Korea, and it’s a very short one. Two ingredients. That’s the whole pass list. What makes it hard in practice is that the ingredient database everyone checks doesn’t sort by that list, so a botanical extract can show up under a heading called Sunscreen and zinc oxide can appear with a colour code attached to its name. So we opened 43 pages on INCIDecoder on July 29, 2026, counted every list by hand, and checked each product against the regulator’s list rather than the database’s heading.

The short version: Korea’s cosmetics regulation lists 32 ingredients that may be used as UV filters, and exactly two of them are minerals: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, both capped at 25%.[1] Anything else on a Korean label is not a mineral filter, no matter what a database files it under. Six products carry no carbon-based filter on any listing I could find, and confirming that took 21 database pages, from two pages for the AESTURA up to seven for the Dr.G, whose entries disagree with each other about what’s in the tube.[6] Across all 21, titanium dioxide appears on just two listings. The rest are zinc oxide alone.

Korea’s rule names 32 UV filters, and only two of them are minerals

Start with the document, because it settles the definition before any product comes into it.

Korean sunscreens are governed by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety regulation on cosmetic safety standards, which applies to every cosmetic manufactured, imported or distributed in Korea. Article 4 sends you to Annex 2 for ingredients that need use restrictions, then closes the door: preservatives, UV filters and the like that are not in Annex 2 may not be used.[1] So the list isn’t a suggestion of common filters. It’s the set.

Annex 2’s UV filter table runs to 32 ingredient names. Thirty are carbon-based. Two are not: 징크옥사이드, zinc oxide, at a limit of 25%, and 티타늄디옥사이드, titanium dioxide, also 25%.[1] Korean writeups call the mineral type 무기자차 and the carbon-based type 유기자차, and if the naming of those two categories is what brought you here, our breakdown of organic versus inorganic takes the words apart properly. This article assumes you already know which bucket you want and just wants to hand you the bottles.

Two things follow that matter for reading any label:

  • A mineral claim is checkable in seconds. Find the UV filters on the list. If they’re only zinc oxide, only titanium dioxide, or both, it’s mineral. If anything else on the 32 is in there too, it’s a hybrid rather than a mineral formula.
  • The 25% cap applies to both minerals equally. So “mineral” tells you which filter is doing the work, not how much protection you bought. A number on the front does that, and reapplication does more.

Why did six sunscreens take 21 database pages to check?

Because one search gives you one answer and there’s usually more than one. Two rules did the work here, and both are worth stating because every number below depends on them.

Which listings we counted. For each product we ran five or six different forms of its name through INCIDecoder’s search and pooled the results, then opened every entry whose title names that product. Titles that differ only by an SPF marking, a year, or Sun Cream against Sunscreen count as the same product. Three kinds get left out: a different product in the same line, an export version sold under a different product name, and entries filed under a reseller’s brand. One entry with the brand name misspelled as Instree does get counted, because a typo isn’t a reseller.[4] Every exclusion is named and linked in the footnotes.

How we counted filters. Only ingredients on Korea’s list of 32. That isn’t the same as counting whatever a page files under its own Sunscreen heading, and the gap is not a database bug. INCIDecoder prints CosIng data, the EU’s ingredient inventory, and CosIng records Buddleja Officinalis Flower Extract with the function “uv filter”.[2] A recorded function is a description of what an ingredient is said to do. It isn’t permission to sell it as a filter, and Buddleja is not among Korea’s 32. The same inventory pushes the other way for the minerals: zinc oxide’s functions include cosmetic colorant, and its formal name is printed as Zinc Oxide (Ci 77947), which is why you’ll see that colour code sitting next to it on real listings.[2] Titanium dioxide carries Ci 77891 the same way.

Here’s how badly a single search can undercount. Searching Round Lab’s birch line one way returns one Mild-up entry. Adding a second phrasing returns four.[7] For Dr.G, one query returns two entries and the pooled set returns thirteen, of which seven name the sunscreen itself.[6]

And the clearest case for reading past the title is Benton. Two entries sit under near-identical titles: Benton Mineral Sun Cream Spf50+/Pa++++ at 38 ingredients with zinc oxide third and titanium dioxide fourth, and Benton Mineral Sun Cream SPF 50+ Pa++++ at 35 with zinc oxide second and no titanium at all.[5] They’re two different sunscreens. The second one’s own web address says skin-fit, which its title drops. Both are mineral, so nothing is being hidden from you, but if you were matching a box to a page by title you’d have picked the wrong one about half the time.

The best Korean mineral sunscreen picks, fewest listings first

Ordered by how many database entries I had to open to be sure. That ordering is doing real work: fewer entries means fewer chances for two pages to disagree with each other.

AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral

The cleanest record of the six. Two entries, 26 ingredients each, zinc oxide second on both and nothing else the regulator would call a filter.[3] A third entry titled only Aestura Sunscreen also runs to 26 with zinc oxide second, and it stays out. That call isn’t new here, and I’d rather say so than let one decision look like two: our alcohol-free roundup reached the same entry first and set the rule, which is that a page that never names the product can’t stand in for it.[3] Our full review of this one reads the same entry and covers the cast question. Note that the brand’s Red Calming Tone-Up shares the Derma UV365 name and is a hybrid with six filters, so the line name alone won’t tell you which you’re holding.[3] The link goes to the 25ml mini, which is the smallest of the sizes it sells in: current price here.

Benton Skin Fit Mineral Sun Cream

Two entries, 35 ingredients each, zinc oxide second on both, and the first eight positions read the same on both pages.[5] This is the product on the wrong side of the title collision described above, so match the ingredient count on your box before you trust a page: 35 is this one, 38 is the sibling with titanium dioxide in it. Both entries carry the alcohol-free tag and neither carries a fragrance-free tag, which is a separate question from filters and one we took apart in our piece on what those tags cover. Goodal Heartleaf Calming Mineral Filter Sun Cream

Two entries carrying the identical title, and they disagree by sixteen ingredients: 57 against 41.[8] Zinc oxide is the only filter on both, second on the long one and first on the short one, so the mineral answer holds either way. The count doesn’t, and that gap is the reason to trust your own box over either page. At 57 this is the longest single listing here, and even its 41-item version is longer than any listing for the AESTURA, Benton, Isntree or Round Lab, which is worth knowing if a short list is part of what you’re shopping for. Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Natural Sun Cream

Four entries at 25, 26, 30 and 39 ingredients, zinc oxide the only filter on all four.[4] Two details you won’t find on the others. The 30-ingredient entry writes the filter as Zinc Oxide (Nano), the only entry in this whole roundup that says anything about particle size, and if that word changes your decision, read our guide to what nano and non-nano actually certify before it does. The 39-ingredient entry, labelled a 2025 renewal, prints zinc oxide twice, at 33 and again at 38, and prints one silicone twice as well.[4] A duplicated row is a transcription artefact rather than a second dose, and it’s a good reminder that a raw count includes whatever the page repeated. ROUND LAB Birch Juice Moisturizing Mild-up Sun Cream

Four entries, three at 35 ingredients and one at 32, zinc oxide second on every one of them.[7] The 32-ingredient entry is the version titled for export, marked Broad Spectrum, and it’s zinc-only too, though export formulas follow a different regulator’s list than the one quoted above. The thing to be careful about is the brand’s own shelf. Round Lab’s Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen, one word away, is a carbon-filter formula with no mineral in it at all, and that’s the one our birch juice review covers.[7] The retailer calls the mineral one Mild Up Sunscreen while the database calls it Mild-up Sun Cream, so you’re matching three slightly different names for one tube. The sixth pick earns its place on one test and fails to settle almost everything else, so here’s the disagreement in full rather than a tidy summary.[6]

Read the last two columns together and you can see both of this article’s problems in one product. Five entries file Buddleja Officinalis Flower Extract under Sunscreen, which is CosIng’s function record rather than a Korean filter approval.[2] On four of those five, the stricter count is one filter and not two. The fifth, the 32-ingredient entry, has no zinc oxide row at all, so counting Buddleja there would turn none into one, and what you’re really looking at is a page missing a filter rather than a sunscreen without one. And the two longest entries add titanium dioxide, with the 53-item one printing it under its colour code. So the honest statement is narrow: no entry for this product carries a carbon-based filter, and that’s what makes it mineral. Which mineral, and how many, changes with the entry you open. What passes for settled here is what our review of this sunscreen reads, the 36-ingredient entry, where zinc oxide is the only filter on Korea’s list.

Which lookalikes did I have to separate out, and how?

Four patterns, and the first three are name problems rather than chemistry problems.

  • One word apart, opposite answers. Klairs sells All-day Airy Mineral Sunscreen, 33 ingredients with zinc oxide second and nothing else on the list, and also All Day Airy Sunscreen, 44 ingredients with four carbon-based filters and no mineral at all.[9] Same brand, same two words on the front. The mineral one passes the same test the six above passed; it sits here rather than in that list because the pair teaches more than one more pick would. Round Lab’s birch pair and Benton’s two creams split the same way.
  • The line name carries over, the filters don’t. AESTURA’s Red Calming Tone-Up carries the Derma UV365 name and has six filters, including homosalate and ethylhexyl salicylate alongside titanium dioxide.[3] Dr.G’s Green Mild Up Sun Essence carries the Green Mild Up name and lists five carbon-based filters.[6] Neither is mineral, and the shared line name is the only thing that would suggest otherwise.
  • A format change can change the filter. Benton’s Mineral Sun Stick has two entries at 39 ingredients each. One lists titanium dioxide alone. The other lists titanium dioxide plus 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, which is on Korea’s list at a 4% limit and is very much carbon-based.[5] Two entries, two different answers to the only question this article asks.
  • Mineral on the list, missing from the shop. Two products passed the ingredient test and then had no live single-unit retail page I could send you to, so they’re not picks: Illiyoon’s Mineral Sun Cream, 35 ingredients with zinc oxide third and titanium dioxide sixth, and Etude House’s Sunprise Mild Airy Finish, two entries at 34 ingredients with zinc oxide second.[10] The lists are worth having if you find them locally.

What does a mineral filter actually buy me here?

One specific thing for one named group, and less than the shelf implies for everyone else.

The American Academy of Dermatology draws the category line exactly where Korea’s list does, then says who it’s for: “If the active ingredient in your sunscreen is titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or both, you have a physical sunscreen. Dermatologists recommend physical sunscreens, also called mineral sunscreens, for people with sensitive skin.”[11] Keep those two sentences together, because the second one comes with a group written into it. It isn’t a ruling that mineral beats chemical, and the AAD closes off that reading a few lines later: whichever type you’re holding, “any of these sunscreens can effectively protect you from the sun if you select one that is broad spectrum, water resistant, and has an SPF 30 or higher,” and “the best type of sunscreen is the one you will use again and again.”[11]

So the reason to be on this page is a fit rather than an upgrade. Sensitive skin is the group the AAD names. Every pick above lists one mineral filter, or two on the longest pair of Dr.G entries, against the two to six that the carbon-filter sunscreens named in this article carry, and fewer filters meaning fewer things to react to is the argument our AESTURA review makes at more length. Outside that group, nothing quoted here says you should switch.

What the Korean regulation adds is that mineral tells you identity, not strength. Both minerals share the same 25% ceiling, and 30 carbon-based ingredients sit in the same annex with limits of their own.[1] Being on the list is what they all have in common. We took the two words apart in our organic versus inorganic piece, and the particle size question separately in the nano and non-nano guide.

There’s one more limit worth knowing, because it’s the only place the regulation talks about how much. A note under the same table says that where a listed ingredient is used below 0.5% to keep a product from discolouring, that doesn’t make it a sunscreen product.[1] So the rule turns on concentration and on why the ingredient is there. A Korean ingredient list prints neither of those. It gives you a name and a position, which is why an entry that writes Zinc Oxide (Ci 77947) can’t tell you on its own which job the zinc is doing, and why I’ve reported positions rather than converting them into amounts.

What this roundup can’t tell you is how any of these feel or look on your face. I haven’t worn them, and an ingredient list doesn’t carry that. FAQ

How do I tell if the Korean sunscreen I own is really mineral?

Read the ingredient list and look for zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Those are the only two minerals Korea permits as UV filters, out of 32 permitted filter ingredients in total. If either or both are there and nothing else from that list is, it’s mineral. If a carbon-based filter is in there too, you have a hybrid, which is a real and common category rather than a failed mineral.

Why does my sunscreen’s database page list an extract under Sunscreen?

Because the database prints CosIng function records, and CosIng records Buddleja Officinalis Flower Extract with the function “uv filter”. That’s a description of a claimed function, not a Korean approval, and Buddleja is not on Korea’s list of 32. On four of the seven Dr.G entries we opened, counting it would turn one filter into two, and on a fifth it would turn none into one. Count only what’s on the regulator’s list and the number stops moving.

Should I worry if zinc oxide appears twice on the same list?

No, that’s a transcription artefact. One Isntree entry prints zinc oxide at position 33 and again at 38, and prints a silicone twice as well, which tells you the page was typed up with a repeat rather than that the formula doubled anything. It also means a raw count of that page runs long. Compare against another entry for the same product before you treat any single count as the truth.

Am I giving anything up by choosing a mineral formula?

Mostly finish rather than protection. Both minerals are capped at the same 25% as each other under Korean rules, so nothing about being mineral makes a formula weaker or stronger on paper. What changes is how it looks and feels, since zinc can leave a cast, and how many different filters you’re exposed to, which is fewer. The American Academy of Dermatology’s answer names one group and one group only: “Dermatologists recommend physical sunscreens, also called mineral sunscreens, for people with sensitive skin.” The same answer then says any of these sunscreens protects you effectively if you pick one that is broad spectrum, water resistant and SPF 30 or higher. So it’s a fit for a named group rather than a general upgrade.

Can I trust a mineral claim if I only check one database page?

Not reliably, and that’s the practical finding here. Six products needed 21 pages between them. Benton has two creams with near-identical titles and different filters, Round Lab has a mineral and a carbon-filter sunscreen one word apart, Klairs has the same split, and Dr.G’s seven entries answer differently from each other. Open every entry that names your product, and match the ingredient count on your own box before you believe any of them.
