If you search for the best selling Korean sunscreen, you will get a list built by TikTok clips and Reddit threads. We wanted the other list. We opened Hwahae, the Korean review app with over 10 million ratings, pulled its current suncare rankings, and compared them to the Korean sunscreens that dominate Western social media. Out of the top 10 on each side, two products overlapped. The biggest Korean sunscreen on TikTok and Reddit, Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun, does not appear anywhere in Hwahae’s top 15. And eight of the products Koreans rate highest are names most Western shoppers have never seen on a shelf or in a video.
The short version: Korea’s #1 rated sunscreen on Hwahae is Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream, with 29,886 reviews and a 4.60 rating.[1] The West’s #1 viral pick is Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun, which has been the most-discussed Korean sunscreen on Reddit and TikTok for over a year.[2][3] Two products show up on both lists: Round Lab and Torriden Dive-In. The rest are different. Korean shoppers discover sunscreens through pharmacist recommendations and ingredient-analysis apps; Western shoppers find them through algorithm-driven social media and Amazon availability. The gap between the two is the gap between those two discovery systems, and knowing it exists is the first step to shopping past it.

Where we got the numbers
Korean “best-selling” sunscreen data is hard to pin down because the actual sales numbers are private. Olive Young, the country’s largest beauty retailer, publishes category award winners but not unit sales. Hwahae, the review app Koreans use to look up ingredient lists and ratings before they buy, publishes public rankings based on its own algorithm across its 10 million+ reviews.[1] That is the closest thing to a public popularity scoreboard in Korean beauty, and it is where the Korean side of this comparison comes from. We pulled the Sun Care category rankings on 2026-08-25.
For the Western side, we used two sources. GlowRecs published an analysis of 312 Reddit threads and 1,847 comments across r/AsianBeauty, r/SkincareAddiction, and r/KoreanBeauty, tracking how often each product was recommended and the sentiment around it.[2] For TikTok, we cross-referenced product mentions across multiple roundup articles from sites that track viral K-beauty, and used the Soo Beauty YouTube video “Stop Buying ‘Viral’ K-Beauty (What Koreans Actually Use)” (518,669 views) as a signal check.[3][4][5]
A note on honesty: we say “best-selling” in the title because that is what people search for. What we actually compared is review volume and ratings (Korea) against social media mention frequency and sentiment (West). Nobody outside Olive Young’s accounting team knows the real unit sales, and we won’t pretend otherwise.
What Koreans actually rate highest: Hwahae’s top 10
These are the top 10 sunscreens on Hwahae’s Sun Care rankings as of 2026-08-25, exactly as they appear on the public page.[1] Every product is SPF50+ PA++++.

Three things jump out. First, Round Lab is not just #1, it dominates: the brand also holds #11 (a different Birch formulation) and #14 (a sun stick), three of the top 15 spots for a single brand.[1] Second, the ranking is not a simple review count. Dr.G has 18,005 reviews and sits at #10; ILLIYOON has 215 reviews and sits at #9. Hwahae’s algorithm weighs rating, recency, and other factors we can’t see, which means this list rewards products that satisfy the people who try them, not just the ones with the biggest marketing push. Third, and this is the core of the article: at least five of these ten products, BLANC DE VIE, ATOPALM, S.NATURE, MEDIHEAL’s sun serum, and ILLIYOON’s sun lotion, are names that almost never show up in English-language K-beauty content.
Round Lab is the one Korean sunscreen the data agrees on. The pattern here is different from Hwahae. The Western list is led by Beauty of Joseon, a product with massive visibility but polarizing reviews: according to the GlowRecs analysis, 46% of Reddit discussions about the Relief Sun mention breakouts or a greasy feel.[2] On TikTok, however, it is the product with the most clips, the most “no white cast” demos, and the most repurchase videos. One article called it “arguably the most viral Korean sunscreen ever.”[5] That kind of dominance does not happen through product quality alone. It happens through algorithm reach and Amazon availability, and it is why the Western list looks so different from the Korean one.

The overlap and the gap
Lay the two lists side by side and the overlap is small. Two products appear in both Hwahae’s top 10 and the Western viral top 10.

The biggest surprise is at the top of each list. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun is the #1 most-discussed Korean sunscreen in the English-speaking world and it does not appear in Hwahae’s top 15 at all.[1] That does not mean Koreans dislike it: it is a consistent Olive Young best-seller, and it has strong brand recognition inside Korea. But on the platform where Korean shoppers rate products by ingredient lists and personal experience, it is not leading the conversation. Round Lab is.
Why do the lists diverge? Three reasons.
- Discovery channels are different. Korean shoppers use Hwahae (ingredient lookups, dermatologist-tagged reviews, pharmacist recommendations) and walk into Olive Young already knowing what they want. Western shoppers scroll TikTok and Reddit, where a single viral clip can move a product from unknown to bestseller in a week. That favors products with photogenic textures and “no white cast” demos over products with strong ingredient profiles but boring application footage.

Half of Hwahae’s top 10 are products that rarely or never appear in English K-beauty content. Here are the notable ones, with no affiliate links because most of them are not available on the platforms we link to.
S.NATURE Aqua 365 UV Sun Protective Cream. Hwahae #5 with 4,844 reviews and a 4.72 rating. S.NATURE is a Korean pharmacy brand, the kind of label you find behind the counter at a dermatology clinic, not in an influencer’s haul video. It is not on Amazon. It is not on YesStyle. And it has almost zero English-language coverage. That a pharmacy-channel sunscreen with no international marketing sits above Torriden, Goodal, and Dr.G on a 10-million-review app is the single data point on this page most worth thinking about.
ATOPALM Zinc Mild Up Sun Cream. Hwahae #4, 738 reviews, 4.72 rating. ATOPALM is another dermatology-adjacent brand, known in Korea for eczema and sensitive skin formulas. The sunscreen is zinc-only, mineral, and designed for irritated skin. It is on Amazon, which makes it one of the few Korea-only favorites you can actually buy from outside the country. MEDIHEAL Madecassoside Moisture Sun Serum. Hwahae #6, 1,140 reviews, 4.62 rating. Western shoppers know MEDIHEAL for sheet masks and nothing else. In Korea, the brand has expanded into sun care, and this centella-based serum-type sunscreen sits above Dr.G, which has six times its review count. A reminder that brand recognition travels unevenly.
ILLIYOON Ceramide Ato Sun Lotion. Hwahae #9, 215 reviews, 4.76 rating, the highest rating in the entire top 15. ILLIYOON’s Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream is well-known in the West as a barrier-repair moisturizer, but the sun lotion from the same line is almost never mentioned. A tiny review count and the top satisfaction score: exactly the kind of product Hwahae’s algorithm surfaces and TikTok’s algorithm buries.

And the third, Round Lab, we already covered above. It is the only product that is #1 in one system and top 3 in the other.
What this means for how you shop
If your entire Korean sunscreen education comes from TikTok and Reddit, you are shopping from a list that was built by algorithms, availability, and English-language influencer reach, not by the preferences of the Korean market the products come from. That is not a problem if the product works for you. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun is a fine sunscreen. But it is not the sunscreen Korean reviewers on the country’s biggest review platform rate highest, and pretending that “viral” equals “what Koreans use” is the kind of gap this article exists to close.
The practical takeaway is simple. If a product is on both lists, like Round Lab or Torriden, the agreement between two very different evaluation systems is a strong signal. If a product is viral but absent from Hwahae, it is worth asking whether you found it because it is good or because it was available and photogenic.
